Windshield cracked, WTF?

Sitting Ducks windshield has cracked on the bottom, above the defroster vent TWICE.

This morning while sitting and waiting to go thru the gate at FT Bragg, CRACK! mine cracks too. Nothing has hit them, they just cracked while the heater was set to heat on the floor / defrost. Both Jeeps are new 05's. Is this a common problem?

No, it's not a common problem. Go back to the Dealership...

Yep....back to the womb with that. I'll bet it is a problem with the installation that allows the glass to be in a bind. When expansion or contraction occurs....POP. Can you tell if it was the inside or outside layer that cracked??? (run your fingernail or Leatherman over both sides of the crack area)

Yep 2 weeks ago , about 4 inches to center on the passenger side. Started small and got to be over 6 inches while driving home.

I have my third little chip form a rock and just waiting with the colder weather coming that it is going to spiderweb. I will be able to get it replaced through insurance but It is still a hassle. I ALWAYS seem to get rock chips. Does anyone else have this problem? I mean all the time

Mine cracked too recently with about 29k miles. I had the heater set to floor/vent for a long drive in the snow. Now I keep the setting at only floor. My insurance will cover it with a $100 deductible. I'm goin to try to wait until spring before I get it done. The crack seems to have stopped growing...for now.

Being in North Carolina I dont see this being too much of a problem but whats the temperature like there. I do know that if its cold enough outside and you blow the hot air on the windshield it will crack them even without any divits or chips or anything. It is a common problem in Montana. The best way to cure this is turn the heater and defroster on right when you start you car allowing the windshield to slowly warm up instead of hitting it with all hot air at once

No, I do not hose it. I was a recruiter in Maine and know not to do that. I always start whatever vehicle it is and allow the defroster to slowly warm the winshield. Sometimes I carefully use an Ice scraper for frost/ice if I have to leave right away.

This morning the windshield had been defrosted and was clear for 20 min (Before and during the drive to post.) The heater was set to floor heat / defrost because the inside fogs sometimes.

I am just back from the dealer where the service department is telling me its a rock chip (BS) and he does not want to fix it but the manager will be back on Monday.

My wife's 05 did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago.

Took it back to the dealer and he saw this imaginary chip where a rock hit it.
BS

and told her he couldn't fix it under warranty.

Had to have mine replaced last year because the rock chip turned into a crack. As the installer was taking the old glass found another chip under the rubber edging, I guess that could have eventually turned into a crack also.

Exatley what happened to me. I know it chipped the first time it was really cold out and I ran the defrost for the first time. Took it to the dealer and he ran his pen on the outside of the glass and found where the "rock" had caused the chip..............bullship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My windhsield on my 04 cracked directly above the defrsoter vent. Took it to the dealer and they would not warranty it they said it chipped then cracked, my word against theres type of thing. I even contacted DCX and the district manager didn't really give a crap.

I left teh crack be for a couple months and then a brake booster coming off a semi took out the whole driver side the windhsield. So yeah its replaced now.

Take it back to teh dealer and get them to fix it. Also I'm very careful about having the heat on the hottest setting on defrsoter as thats how it was when it cracekd teh first time.

I've lost count on the # of windshields I've went through - maybe 5 or 6.

But none are from using the defroster. All rock mishaps and one roll-over.
