Will 4.56 Overheat a D44/D30??

I just talked to a shop about regearing my D44 & D30 to 4.56 (based on what I read on this forum) but they told me that gear ratio tends to overheat and blow fluid out the breather. He recomended 4.10.

I have a 5 speed, 4.0 with 33's. Not sure if it would be worth the cost to just upgrade from 3.73 to 4.10.

Anyone have this problem or should I find another shop?

They don't have a clue what they're talking about. Go to a different shop.

with this being said, anytime you get new gears there is a break in period, after i put mine in i drove for 30 miles then stopped to let the diff cool down, did that 3 times then bever looked back. some people say there is no break in period, i just did what my shop said. but to say you cant run 4:56 ever because of heat is retarded

I've been running 4.56's in my D30/D44 with 31 tires and haven't any problem. I believe your shop is mistaken.

I had to put out my 4.88's just the other day, big fire...

What can happen is a couple of things:

1. Use of an aftermarket cover with a higher fill plug. Owner fills to the bottom of the hole (now over filled) just like they did with the stock cover and gear lube sprays out of the breather.

2. Installer does not cut adequate drain back holes during an ARB install (it's in the install directions!) and gear lube sprays out of the breather. Ask me how I know this one...

he is right that the gears will get hotter, and there may be times when the oil expands, but it's not going to make a difference to the gears...it's not going to burn them up.

Maybe they're just trying to unload a set of 4:10 gears on who he presumes to be naive. Not saying you are. Find another reputable shop that will perform the services you ask for. Not saying they're not.
