Wide tires vs skinny tires..
What are some of the advantages of running wider tires vs running skinny tires? Also, do bigger tires really make that much of a difference off roading? What is the best tire size and width for climbing steep hills? Thanks

wide tires offer more floatation characteristics but increase drag and therefor lowering gas milage - they're also heavier.
narrower tires have a heavier footprint and can sink in and dig well and offer higher MPG but are limited to their applications |

x2! The larger the tire, the easier it will roll over obsticles. Think of it this way. Your standing on a gravel road. You have a tennis ball and soccer ball. Which one will go farther when rolled with the same amount of force? The soccer ball will, mostly because of the lagrer circumference. Last edited by jeeptinker78; 07-24-2008 at 05:15 PM.. |

Tall narrow tires have worked much better for me in snow.

I'm a tall skinny tire fan. esspecially on a jeep. Back in the day BFG offered thier mud tire at 33x9.5-15 That was my preferance. Now I run a 285x35-16 which is right at 32dia and is 8.5 wide.

So far, since changing to 33's it has made offroading much easier. Places that I had to work at with stock tires are a piece of cake with the 33's. I have 12.50's but I think the height and ground clearance have been the biggest improvements more than the width. Also, when aired down the taller sidewall gives better flex and provides better traction.

That's usually true until you hit really deep snow where you're not hitting the ground, then you'd want wider tires for better flotation.
