why is the automatic four speed such a...

Im new to the site, I wanted to ask why the 04 jeep wrangler automatic four speed is such a dog. Sometimes I fill like on a hill im gonna have to get out and push. The overdrive kicks in to early and kicks out to late. Is this a common thing for this tranny, and what can one do to fix it, its annoying. Thanks.

Its undergeared from the factory. regear as deep as you can, won't fix it, but makes it tolerable.

Well to start it was originally build for the Caravan, which is aerodynamic and built like a car for great mileage. Then they tried to just shoe horn it the Jeep a vehicle built like a truck and has terrible aerodynamics, it didn't mate well to the low revving 4.0L like it did to the high revving 3.8L in the Caravan. Basically it was a huge mistake by Chrysler and it has terribly high OD, and bad shift points. The engineers that thought this was a good idea at Chrysler should all be fired.

So no it's not just your Jeep, regearing helps in most cases, the only saving grace of the 42RLE is they made the Rubicrawler for which is why I will bare with it for now.

I've owned this jeep since december 09, love the tm, owned a 93 yj several years ago, but this is so annoying. Will that's good to know. Im running unknown brand wheels and bf 30 inch tires on my jeep, they were knit when I bought it used from my local jeep dealer. I've compared my gps to the speedo and there is a two mile an hour difference, not much. But I thought that was doing something to the computer.

Sometimes I just hit the switch and lockout the OD.
Strong headwinds when I'm driving in the 45-55mph range seem the worst.
Faster and the engine is at a rpm where it makes better power and slower
the trans will shift out of OD most of the time on it's own.
Yes the shift calibration sucks!

You can also get a good tuner then you can adj. the shift points in the tranny to better suit the engines RPM range
