Whose ur favorite...............
Aiight yall im new here to this Forum, had my Jeep bout 2 years now ('97 Wrangler 2.5L 4cyl) and im ready to take the financial plunge to mod it out the way I want it so I can tackle bigger and badder things out on the trail. I'm lookin at gettin lower gears, a 4-4.5"lift, some 33-35" tires, lockers, and a winch. My question is what companies do yall reccomend for the various parts. I've heard a lot of people swear by Teraflex or RE and some like the Rancho stuff. Just lookin for some more opinions. Thanx yall

No no no, "yall" in the Southern term, is singular.... "All Yall" is plural........ "Good ole" is the first two words a Yankee transplant learns when relocated to the South... As for your question. Winch, 3" suspension and BFG or MTR tires.. Now all yall understand? ![]()

Well, I see that you're from Tucson, or at least in Tucson, also.
You can do as many do, and waste a lot of money, or you can do as a few do (and some of those have already wasted a lot of money learning), and go by years of "on the site" training, so to speak. That is those that wheel hard in the type of terrain we have around here, and have watched, see what breaks, what works well, and what doesn't. If you plan to stay in AZ, or the west, for any length of time, and you want to wheel on some of the harder trails in this state, I would recommend that you spend and/or save what it takes, to do the mods right, pretty much the first time. - Tires, MT/R's, without a doubt. For the type of stuff that we have in AZ, they are simply the best bang for the buck. They stick like glue to any of the types of rocks here. The BFG Krawlers (and only the Krawlers, stay away from the BFG MT's etc) have demostated no advantage in traction, but do have a slight tip of the hat in sidewall strength, however that comes at a much higher price per tire and a much heavier tire. - Lift, 4" + 1 1/4" bl will give you tons of flex for 35's. I have ca 23" of total tire movement in the front and 19" in the rear. This lift combo keeps the COG relatively low, which is really, really important for some of the harder trails around here, that offer steep waterfalls (climbs) and insane off camber areas. Stay away from TeraFlex and and be leary of RE. I would recommend another brand, but it's more expensive than the two previously mentioned brands, but is top notch in quality and durability for the trails that we have around here. If you're going with 33's instead of 35's, you'll need less suspension lift (still you'll want the 1 1/4" body lift). Don't forget, with larger tires, even 33's, you'll need to re-gear to run the hard trails. See "lockers" below. ![]() - Armour, you'll want a good gas tank skid, engine skid, rockers, and front and rear (preferrable one that wraps around the corners, providing rear corner protection when you come off the rocks), and a steering box skid. You'll want to box the front, passenger side, axle mount, upper control arm mount, and all four lower, axle end, control arm mounts, as well as both rear upper control arm (frame end) mounts. Lastly, don't forget front and rear diff skids. Don't overlook the importance of skids in the big rocks. - Lockers, depending on what you can afford. Front and rear locked is perferred, and certainly required on the harder trails. In order of strength (and price ).- LockRite (or equal) - Detroit - ARB airlocker Regarding gearing. Depends on your transmission type (manual or auto) and tires. With 35's: - 4.56's if you have an auto tranny. - 4.88's if you have a manual tranny (and you'll still need a 4:1 in the xfer case to run the hard trails). With 33's: - 4.10's if you have an auto tranny. - 4.56 or 4.88's with a manual tranny. Still looking at a 4:1 in the xfer case though. Consider the Currie A/R for the front. Helps tremendously in the off camber areas here. What trails have you run, around here, in the past ? [EDIT] Just noticed from your sig that you have a manual tranny. Fred
