Wheels Steel Vs. Aluminum

Alright, I have an opportunity to get a good deal on some stock TJ Canyon rims that are in good shape. I would use my stock 97' rims (30 inch wheel package), which I really like for everyday driving on my GYR AT/S's and the Canyon rims for some 32 or 33 GYR MT/R's (for off-road). Which would you go with for off-road, aluminum, or steel. Durability? Weight? 15" and backspacing is fine.

You actually have a chance to pound a steel rim back into shape if you clip a rock and loose your seal on the trail....that is the main pro for steel over alum.

Aluminum is a little lighter est.10% and will absorb impacts a little better. I think it's a lot of bull but the manufactures use this as a selling point.

If you go to a steel rim, you can get the proper back spacing so those 33's fit well. They are cheap, if you mess one up beyond repair, its no problem replacing it.

My TJ is only a year old, and I've already noticed rust forming on my spare wheel. I'm currently looking to replace them with aluminums.. rust after one year? No thanks.

Yup...rust is a problem. But fortunately it's extremely easy to repaint them

Go with the Steel wheels and you will love the Goodyear MT/R's.

Depends on whether or not you will do alot of rock crawling.

I don't, and I have used the same set of Aluminum Wheels (Outlaw I 15x10's) on my CJs for over 8 years now, and they are going on my next '77 once it hits the road this summer. They always look good, and I never even waxed them, EVER!

When you call for wheels, just ask what backspacing they are available in, I used National Tire & Wheel back then, and they gave me the correct backspacing so i would get no rubbing, which I never did.
