Whats this?????????????

I have been hearing a tick from the engine. Its a steady tick that increases with rpms and normally does it when I first crank it and about 5 minutes after. Its right in front of the oil filter with a wire coming out of it. I took a picture but dont know how to post them. Can someone tell me what it is and how to change it?

are you sure this is the culprit? I have a ticking as well but at first I thought it was coming from my exhaust flange were the headers meet the down pipe. Now I think it is a lifter. So any suggestions would help me as well.

That is the camshaft position sensor, tells the coils when to fire. Are you sure it is making the noise?

Pillswoj is correct. That is the Cam Position Sensor. I recently had a problem with mine. Took it apart to find out that the oil pump drive shaft had too much play in it and broke the magnet out of the sensor so it was just riding around inside. Check the inside of the sensor to make sure there is no loose peices. And check for play in the shaft below. There should be no preceptable play in the shaft. If you have just enough play I can see if contacting the magnet inside and making a ticking sound. I had to replace both the sensor and the oil pump drive unit. About $50 a piece.

I can put my hand over it and it changes the tone. I am sure thats where it coming from. Do I just take the bolt out and pull the sensor out? Same for putting it back in? How hard is it to replace the oil pump drive unit?
