The ground strap to the hood does nothing for the charging system.

if the voltage regulator is starting to intermittantly go it can cause strange problems like this. i had a ford close to the same thing would happen to. tested fine at all stores taken to but would spike and drop voltage on its own. grabbed a junkyard unit for like 15-20 bucks and swapped it in. worked fine after that.

Still not a good reason to leave it unattached.

Do you know why jeep put a ground strap on the hood?

So the hood light would work.

It reduces static electricity build-up, which could cause radio interference.
I just like attachments made as they were intended.

dang. it was fine for a minute, now its acting up again.. i been worried about the voltage reg in the pcm. thats a $300 part. i will put that strap to the hood, for what its worth. ive had the battery tested, and the alternator tested multiple times. thanks everyone for the input. keep em coming.

a previous poster said he got one for his old ford that had strange problems like yours and got one from the junk yard for $20-30. try that since its cheap, easy and you will know its fine.

so, i put the ground to the hood. i drove it. 40 miles round trip. once along the way, the dash indicator dropped all the way down, and the check gauges light came on. i pulled over and killed it. i start it up and its fine again. the thing is, i need this car for a long trip soon. 200miles. if all i gotta do is pull over and kill it, i guess i'll be ok. sketchy tho. i guess i'll spend the afternoon screwing around with all the major connections of the charging circuit. i'm not ready to purchace a pcm, and the junkyards over here don't have any jeep parts. thats a good sign tho.

Maybe the gauge is just bad. Check the electrical system with a multimeter next time it happens.

Yes, the hood light does have its own ground. Mine is quite dim without the ground strap connected, too.

Isn't the hood light body made of plastic and not grounded to the hood?...

The hood light (at least for mine) has a separate ground wire. Connects to the same fastener that the hood ground strap does.
