I had a similar problem about 6 months ago. I was coming back from lunch on my way back to work and the passenger side front caliper decided to lock up. It was hard to steer straight. Finally able to pull over and saw smoke coming from the wheel area. The rubber dust cover caught on fire. When I finally got home, I pulled both wheels and checked the pads / rotors. Nothing to serious, changed the pads and checked for other related problems. Cleaned calipers. Havn't had any problems since.

waiting will result in excess break pad wear, and possible overheating of rotors and warping if you go thru a puddle and rapidly cool them.

FIX IT NOW!
Seriously - mine started doing the same thing, then the whole caliber locked right up at about 45MPH from tapping the brakes. Not good. You can try just tearing them apart and re-greasing everything, but you can also pick up new calipers and pads for about $100. -BN

I say FIX it too! I have a car with drums all the way around, and the front froze up on me one day, and I kept neglecting it, then the other day I had a chance to check it out, and the brake shoes are trash! I think i need new everything for the brakes on that wheel!

Assuming the caliper is the problem, fix it as soon as possible. If not, you may end up far from home and have the caliper lock up on you. Then, you have to either fix it where it is, or have it towed. My left front caliper locked up and I had to swap it out in the parking lot of a Big Lots. Not fun.

dude...your brakes are smokin.
everybody is sayin fix it now. that doesn't mean wipe down. fix any and everything possible. It's your brakes!!!! I wouldn't trust driving it to get the parts to fix it. brake failure is not an option. If they were smoking i wouldn't even trust the pads, they are possibly damaged from the heat and could crack at a later time. It sounds like you need to get help if you cannot tell weather its the clutch, the brakes or the antigravistein smoke valve. on that note I don't feel you have given us enough info to even say that it is the brakes--so far it's just everybodys wild *** guess. it was from front wheel well. was it the tire. was the rotor hot? was the hub hot? was the tire underinflated? if it is the brakes...what is happening? is the caliper seized? is the caliper not sliding on its mounts? etc... scott 97TJ |
