what should i avoid with d35

I know I know, D35's suck. but I need to know what kind of upgrades and terrain I should avoid and keep my 35 out of, until I can afford a D44 in a few centuries.

Honestly, with stock tires I wouldn't worry at all. Keep it from bouncing and jerking in the rocks. Other then that, let her have it.

At absolute MAX 31", no rocks, light mud, snow and sand should be ok though. Also avoid using a lot of gas/stupid pedal.

The main thing to avoid is the rightmost pedal. You will be fine with 31's and an open or limited slip diff as long as you don't try to get over up things with high rpms. I have found that anything I could not get up/over at 1200-1500 rpms probably should be bypassed anyway.

I actually ran my D35 locked on 31's for 2+ years and the only breakage was when I forgot rule 1. With open or limited slip carriers there is less stress so don't let the horror stories prevent you from using the jeep.

WEll just be nice to the skinny pedal in the rocks and other high traction areas. Avoid bouncing and jerking at all times. Don't forget about the stellar d30 up fornt as well. 31's though will still leave you with a good amount of freedom to do what you will. I think actual "rock Crawling" is the only area you will need to worry about. Use common sense on steep uphills and technical areas. If it's smooth hammer down!!!!

Things that tend to break D35's:
  • Large tires (33"+)
  • Heavy throttle input
  • LOCKERS
  • Spinning / hopping tires suddengly grabbing traction

As people have been saying, be easy on the gas and if the tires start hopping or spinning back off, pick a different line, or winch through.

While the D35 is has a higher failure rate due to its nature as a weaker axle they can be wheeled "ok" so long as they aren't pushed much. I've talked to many people who've been wheel'n them for years without problems. They also tend to drive them a bit easier. I've been running mine for 3 years now on many wheel'n runs without significant problems.

HD 27 spline alloy axleshafts are available. Talke to Randy's Ring and Pinion or other suppliers for the Yukon Axle and Gear's HD D35 27 spline shafts. They provide a ~20% upgrade in stregth. I still wouldn't run a locker with these shafts but the give a little extra piece of mind for those with LSDs.

Avoid lunch box lockers. These replace just the spider gears in the diff and do not address the axleshafts.

Super35 upgrades (with lockers) are fine as they replace not only the whole diff but also the axleshafts. Yields an axle as strong as a D44 I believe, and guys have successfully run 35" tires with lockers on the SuperD35 upgarded axles.

The D35 IS weak but that doesn' mean you can't enjoy wheel'n your Jeep. Just be careful. I am.

I've been running 35s on my locked D35 for a few months now, no problem. But I know when to take it easy, and I'm lucky if I get in any rough stuff more than about once a month.

Also keep in mind the sheer amount of people running D35s. Yes, the axle is weaker. There's no argument there. But if twice as many people are running 35s, than 44s, then you will hear twice as many bad stories.

Heavy torque is what causes so much stress on the axle. If you don't try to crawl up things you shouldn't, and take it easy on the axle, you won't have problems. Keep it within reason and you should be alright. Just always keep in mind what you are sitting on and baby it for now. You can still enjoy your jeep. And at 31s, I don't think you have too much to worry about. 33 + is when you need to be careful, and pay attention to how you wheel/drive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSaBWo5qVaw This guy has been running stuff like this on 33's locked for 4 years without a problem. This was the first shaft he has broke.
I wheel in the sand 90% of the time and the mud 10% of the time. Knock on wood, but I haven't had any problems other then one set of spider gears going bad. Some guys seem to run them forever without many issues and others seem to break them turning a corner. I'd like to upgrade to a super 35 kit or a dana 44, but it hard for me to replace something I have never broke.
