I'm looking at '97-'00 TJ's with a 4 liter and automatic transmission. Did the D44 come on any of these models?

yes, plenty of them did. The dana 35 and the dana 44 look pretty different so if you know what you are looking for it would be easy to tell. The dana 44 should also have the factory track lok in the rear as well. Just look up a picture of the 44 and you should be fine!

Not all D44 have the track lock. I got mine without it, as I prefered this.
Posi is no fun in the rain and snow.
I believe the D44 was an option on the Sport package and the X package, but standard on the Rubi's.

1997-2000, the Dana 44 was an option on the Sport and Sahara. They're pretty easy to spot, if you know what you're looking for. The Dana 35 is uniform and oval. The Dana 44 is oblong. If it has anti-lock brakes, it does not have a Dana 44. If you're running vehicle history reports and enter the VIN, it will state whether or not it has anti-lock brakes.
I too would prefer and open differential on slippery streets.

You won't find it on SEs and rarely on Xs. More likely to be found on Saharas, Sports (especially the ones that came with the 30" wheel/tire group), and it is standard on Unlimiteds, Rubicons and Rubicon Unlimiteds.

Does the Dana 44 even come on the standard X model? I'm going by when I shopped for my '05 but the only X model with a Dana 44 was the Rocky Mountain Edition. Maybe that's different for the older models.
Not all Sports come with the Dana 44. You have to crawl under there and check.

The special edition models come standard with a 44 except a Columbia edition, or so I was told. Willys, RME etc. have a standard 44.

To simplify your answer, no '97 to '02 Wranglers came standard with a Dana 44. The Dana 44 was available as an extra cost option for any of them with the exception of the 2.5L SE where the Dana 44 was not available even as an upgrade. Starting in 2003, the Dana 44 became standard in the Rubicon (front and rear Dana 44s) and then when the Unlimited came out later, it came with a standard rear Dana 44.
So other than a Rubicon and Unlimited, no Wrangler models come standard with Dana 44 axles, it was only an available optional extra-cost upgrade.

OK, thanks for the info (I'm pretty sure I can visually tell the difference). The only reason I ask is that every '97-'00 auto that I've seen has had the D35. So if I'm understanding you guys correctly, the D44 was an option all the way back to '97 (on the Sports and Saharas), even with automatic trannys. Did the D44 come with 3.73s during these years?

Another way to tell is the fill plug, rubber is 35 and metal is 44. Dana 30 is the front end of every Jeep minus the Rubicon.

FWIW, I have a '98 with a Dana44 out of an '02, in the '02 it came with factory trac-lock and 3.73:1 ratio.
I personally like the trac-lock in rain and snow especially, but I'm still going to swap it out for a locker, probably ARB.
