What kinda gas do you guys use...

I got an '04 Sport and I used to use regular. I noticed knocking coming from the engine so I ran till empty and filled up with Premium. Haven't noticed any knocks... just wondering what you guys use with the 5 speeds.

You shouldn't have to increasse your octane level to prevent the knock. These aren't high compression motors. I'd take the car in to the shop and tell them it's detonating, and have them fix it (usually by setting the timing). It could also be caused by a lean fuel condition.

Contrary to popular belief, you gain nothing by using a higher than recommended octane (Yes, it will probably help prevent detonation, in this case, but I'd bet your's is a timing issue).

I was using regular since I got the car brand new in August and I really haven't noticed the knock.. it just started recently. I'll change gas stations and go with regular for a while and see what happens.

I am running the mid-grade and have never had a problem running it. The interesting thing for me is I did run 1 tank of premium in it in the past and it got much better gas mileage on that tank. I have been monitoring the last 2 tanks mileage closely on the mid-grade and am getting 15 mpg on it. My next fill up I am going to turn the premium and see if the mileage again improves.

Unless something is wrong with your engine like it is pinging from carbon deposits, there is no benefit to running any octane higher than 87.

And if there is something wrong, you really do need to address the root problem, not apply a band-aid fix.

Carbon build-up will cause detonation. But if you use a higher octane fuel, it won't work for long and you'll even make the problem worse. If your engine is programmed to run 87, the ignition timing will not be advanced enough to burn all of the 89+ octane fuel in the combustion chamber.

If your engine is pinging, the dealer may need to reprogram the computer. I'd make an appointment.

In Colorado the standard octane is 85, I got horrible knocking when I ran 85, switched to 87 and everything sounds great.

Mine has pinged on 87 since I bought it in 03. Has been back to the dealer for the problem mulitple times, no fix. I still run 87 cause I am to cheap to run the other stuff, plus fule milage decreases as octane rises.

factory recomendation is for 87 octane, I don't know anything that would run on 85 octane except a lawn mower or VW bus

wrong. the standard octane rating in CO is 85 (as mentioned earlier). oddly enough, my Jeep runs perfectly fine (no detonation even under heavy sustained load climbing 12,000 foot mountain passes) on the 85 octane swill

Im usually nice and give it our mid grade (87)... unless im feeling especially poor.

I run 89 in mine. The benefit is here in IA it's cheaper than 87. Ethanol and runs fine.

Ditto. 89 w/ 10% ethanol. I guess having all this corn around is good for SOMETHING.
