Any good quality main-stream brand of 10W-30 makes my engine purr like a kitten since it knows it is well protected. With 142K miles on my '97 4.0L, it still doesn't burn a drop of oil either.

mobil-1 10w30 is what i use in all of my vehicles.

I go down to 5w30 when the winter sets in.

Any name brand 10w-30 will be fine. Step down to 5w-30 in cold weather. I use Max-life, it has additives that protect the seals (which is always a problem in TJs)

If you use synthetic you should not need to change for the winter. I run castrol syntec 10w-30 in the Rubi and YJ. No hard cranking durring the winter.

Brand name 5-30, (Idaho never gets real hot), brand name filter. 113,000 miles, changed every 3k, no loss between oil changes.

A guy I was talking to Rebuilds Mustang 5.0 engines from Side-hit Junkyard queens. He strips them down to the block. He ripped apart a car and found almost NO wear. He was amazed, hes been working on Stangs for a while and he knows the 5.0 inside out. He looked at the Odo and saw it read 179K. He said the motor looked like it had 20K on it. He contacted the previous owner and found the Reason. He used Mobil 1 Synthetic and Mobil 1 Filters.

This was posted awhile back and someone who used to race short track (I think) said they started off with the $5.00/qt synthetic stuff and by the time they were all done racing, there were using the cheap $.99 stuff. After tearing the engines down, they found it didn't really make a difference what brand they used.

With that said, I've always used Valvoline in all of my vehicles and have never had a problem. Just make sure you use a good quality filter like K & N, Mobil 1, ect. Don't use Fram oil filters.

While Fram filters used to be good, their quality has taken a nose-dive in recent years since they sold out to first one then another corporate monolith... first it was Allied Signal but currently Honeywell which must be recent . Filter tests that tore them open to see how they were constructed consistently ranked Fram's stuff at or near the bottom.

So while I used to use Fram, afterall they're the brand-name that everyone carries, I will not use them at all now even if they're the only ones in stock that will fit my Jeep. I've pretty well settled on either Purolator Pureone or AC-Delco's Duraguard that both did well in the couple of filter tests I have read.

Here's one filter study that makes for interesting reading...

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

The above filter study ranked Fram at the bottom.
