how does synthetic compare to that?
It doesnt matter how anything else compares. You could have a 50k mile oil... but youll still need to change the filter at 3-4k synthetic or not. Sure you can go further but is it really worth it?

Synthetic oils last much longer and wont break down but the filters do not.

Something that many aren't aware of... that many of the reasons to change the oil are because of the normal contaminants that CANNOT be filtered out by the oil filter. You could install a fresh oil filter every day of the week and the normal combustion byproducts, acids, etc. continue to build up in the oil. I don't care how often you change the filter, the oil still needs to be changed on a regular basis and that it may be synthetic doesn't change that. Synthetic engine oils absorb those combustion byproducts, acides, etc. that are too fine to be filtered out by the oil filter as mineral-based oils do. Synthetics may "last longer" but that's marketing BS... the contaminants/acids/combustion byproducts are still there and changing the oil is the ONLY way to get rid of them.

I just don't get why people keep pushing synthetic oil as the way to extended our oil change intervals. It gets dirty just as fast as mineral oil does and has no magic dirt/acid/combustion byproduct repellant.

We do it because we know it irritates you Jerry

Seriously though.....my CRD Grand specifies the use of synthetic. Use of anything else besides voiding the warranty, has the capability to seriously foul the DPF which I think while not apples to apples, does take away from your argument that synthetics get just as dirty just as quickly. I can run oil and filter change intervals up to 12,500 miles depending on the use catagory and still be within warranty on the Grand. The base interval is 6500 miles for severe duty with 7500 and 10,000 also being acceptable for less stressful duty.

TBN or Total Base Number is the measurement of an oils ability to resist acids and corrisive build up.

A PH scale or Power of Hydrogen scale is used in measuring the strength of an acid, it is a scale from 0 to 12. High conentrations of acids score 0 to 5, high concentrations of alkili or Caustics score 7 to 12, 6 is a base.

All acids and alk/caust strive to be a base. When you have to much alk/caust you add acid until the PH measures as close to 6 or base as you can. Acids require caustics or alkili to become base.

Motor oils utilize Zinc and straight Alkili in order to combat the acid build up that occurs in a combustion engine, synthetic motor oils have more of these and a more consistant make up.

Example: scroll to forth page http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g1971.pdf

The second argument that one may use is that a true synthetic oil is man made and does not rely on petrolium reserves. The less I need OPEC the happier I am.

Thats it I'm done.

I'm in Canada, where it hits -30C in the winter, so from what I've read, I'm going to get Mobil1 5w-30 full synthetic and a K&N filter for my first oil change. Thanks for all the responses, especially about the evil of additives.

That is not true at all....synthetic oils are still petroleum based.

I lied and so did you

Contrary to my character and last post I just had to link this.

http://www.synlube.com/synthetic.htm

I fell out of my chair laughing while reading this. If you believe anything that is written and by all means follow up with the links posted and good ol' google. I was wrong, others were wrong and its funny. Please read it for yourself just turn your speakers off because the tune just keeps looping.

To all my Jeep friends and especially Jerry who I am sure was tired of the debate...

I apologize

I am probably going to follow through with more research and really come to the end of this stupid trail of nonsense.

I use pennzoil 10w30 and a NAPA Gold filter, don't need high mileage considering the Jeep has 75, but the motor only has 5

LOL.....they yak about other companies hype but yet, they have their own.

Just for S's and G's...I looked at their products to see if they had one spec'd for my CRD. Nope...just generic stuff and I doubt I would want to use the same oil for 50,000 miles. Oh...and the music was highly irritating....I had to mute my monitor.

I warned you about the music...

I don't know about their claims, it seems very unrealistic and although they have no problem pointing out the lies in marketing they seem to just use the same game of cat and mouse.

I sent them an email using the points made in this thread I wonder how that will turn out.

I think the moral of the story that I am getting is, true synthetic lube is awesome because it has a certain repeatable characteristics but no one makes it due to the cost and availability.

I run Castrol synthetic blend 5w30 currently, but I've been checking on here for others who live in 115+ degree weather, to see what they run and no one has chimed in yet. Any suggestions what I should be running. Btw the low here gets to be 33 degrees for a couple days a year.
