What is growing on my wheels?? (pic)

When I bought my jeep four years ago there was some weird stuff on a wheel or two. I kinda just faded it out and forgot about it until today I was washing my car for the first time in a loooong time and noticed this "thing" is now on all 5 wheels! What the hell is it? Its spreading and wont scrape off!!

It's the clear coat starting to peel off, and probably a little corrosion starting under the clear coat.

That definately looks like crud under the peeling clear coat.

But, those look like Canyons and I thought there was no clear coat on them?

corrosion. My 4runners wheels have a bit of that going on but no where near as bad...and they are 11 years old.

definately the clearcoat on the wheel. Canyons finish sucks a big one. I feel your pain my friend. I've got a spare set and I'm going to explore refinishing them to see if it's possible to breath life back into the canyons.

same thing happened to my canyons. stripped them down and paint satin black. one of the best and cheapest mods i have done.

kept the lugs and center cap chrome. look at this link. mine look like the ones in post #10.

maybe $30. the hardest, most time consuming was the stripping and prep. (as always). I did not want the added expense and trouble of having the tires dismounted off the wheels. i did the spare first. then the next 4, 2 at a time. I found some "rubber friendly" paint/varnish stripper at lowes. not the best i have used but it worked, just took about 2-3 coats. maybe $17-18 for stripper, a pack of steel wool and some scotch bright pads. Pressure washer also helped.

Then 2 cans of regular satin black for all five wheels. did not even prime. set the tire/wheel on a 5 gal bucket upright. 1 light coat from front and back, rotate tire a little on bucket, another light coat, etc, etc, etc.

i did the spare on one afternoon. then did 2 more another, etc.

edit: forgot to say that i used a couple rolls of cheap masking tape and some newspaper paper
