What is an exciter ring?

Hi gang:
I have my '95 TJ in the shop to get the front axle u-joints replaced. Mechanic called my wife at home and said "his fault, he broke the exciter ring, and he will fix it, but it will take a bit longer"

O.K., what the heck is an exciter ring?? ( I searched, found very little)

He is no doubt talking about what the FSM calls the "tone wheel" and is also called a "tone ring" by some. It is the notched ring (looks kind of like a gear) that is mounted on the axle shaft just inboard of the unit bearing. It is part of the ABS.

I think he was hitting on your wife.

I'm safe. She prefers a man with teeth. (although he is a better mechanic than I am)
