Ripped out all the guts of the D35 to get to the bad pinion bearings. I already replaced the outer bearing last month, but the inner was still growling. I pulled out everything but the pinion, and let the Jeep idle in 1st - GRRUUHH GRUHH GRUUHHH goes the axle. Yep, it had to be the one bearing that required taking the whole damn thing apart to get to.

It's really hard to avoid the urge to regear right now, still having 3.07 open gears, but with buying a house on the horizon, it's sort of hard to stomach the cost at this very moment.

Here's to hoping that the $75 bearing job does the trick for long enough to pony up the cash for a full regear and LSD setup front & rear.

I paid $4.69 last night. I've seen it above $5.00 though. If it keeps going up, I don't know what I'm going to do. Hopefully I get a decent tax refund next year and I can buy me a cheap little gas efficient DD.

What did it sound like, i hear a growling noise when I start off in 1st gear sometimes at low RPMs, but not when idling

How hard is it to change the outer bearing? Pressed in? I've never done a pinion bearing and I need to.

And to think 4 years it was $1.89. Guess which companies are not hurting like the rest of us.

Ignorant statement. Do you know what it costs to rent a deep water offshore oil rig for one day? No, you don't. Anywhere from $300-500k PER DAY. All the government regulations make it even more expensive. Thank Obama for that.

Hopefully in a month, some village in Kenya can have their idiot back.

I agree! No politics here please. Not that I disagree with the statements but we gotta have somewhere to get away from it for a minute.
