Washed it today. Whenever there's like mud, or one time paint from a paintball, on the softtop window, it tends to 'melt' into it and leave a mark. Probably because I bought a cheapo soft top. Oh well

Well I pulled the rear diff completely apart and found what will be a fairly easy fix if I'm real lucky...

Everything out...

Bearings appeared okay upon first inspection:

From left to right this is what came out: oil slinger, outter pinion bearing, a couple pinion bearing preload shims, a funny looking 4 pronged spacer(same size as the preload shims), and then the pinion w/ the solid spacer and inner bearing pressed on.

Size comparison for ****s and giggles... the size of these axle parts still makes me giggle inside... especially after playing with my friend's D35 last weekend

So after finding nothing obviously wrong I looked again closer at the bearings... the inner pinion bearing is fine, but upon further inspection I found this:

The bearing cage is egged out and doesn't let a few of the rollers sit right when loaded. It's sort of hard to tell by the pics but it's noticable in your hands.

Now that I think back when removing the original pinion yoke I think that I removed it with a ****ing hammer:shaking: Probably bent the bearing cage with that stupidity. I've used my 2 jaw puller since I've had it and will continue to do so from now on. Hopefully someone reads this and keeps from screwing up their own diff doing this.

Went to the parts store and ordered a new bearing, will have it tomorrow. Since it's the outter pinion bearing it won't affect the gear setup, the only thing that could be affected is the pinion bearing preload AFAIK. The races are all in great condition so I'm not going to mess with them. I've got my fingers crossed that I end up with the pinion bearing preload in spec or slightly loose so I can remove one of the shims and get it in spec.

Took it through a minute long trail near my house, then swore at it later on for not starting right. Plugs and distributor cap worked...for 3 days. Wires next maybe?

Scored a CB and antenna from my old truck. I forgot that it was still in there. I think I will buy a new antenna though, because its a bit difficult to find a suitable location to mount a magnet-base antenna on a soft-top Jeep. Only place I have found so far is the hood and the front bumper. Neither is to my liking.

Took the bumpers off, then took them to get sandblasted and bed-liner coated. Pick them up tomorrow to be reinstalled.

Meanwhile today, changed my plugs and my air filter. Amazing what a difference the plugs made, they must never have been changed since new (65000 now). The gap on all the plugs had worn out to .050 or greater, two were at .060.
