What Causes Overheating?

So today as im leaving 4wheelparts my temp gauge jumped up to the begining of the red arc. around 220*. Its never done this before so i figured it was just the gauge that was messed up and drove about 3 miles. I Look back down and the gauge is maxed out at 260*. Im now 20 miles from the house so i parked it in a lot for a few min and then get going again with the heat on FULL blast which did bring it down a bit. When i got home i let it sit for 5 or 6 hours and then took it out again to see if it would overheat again. Nope not a thing stayed pegged at 210*, so just as a precaution i bought a new thermastate and replaced it tonight. So my original question is what causes overheating. What could have caused this to do it just this one time. Never before and not afterwards (for now at least). The weather was cooler than it has been recently so i doubt that was a factor. Any Ideas??

Could have been two things i can think of,
1. A air bubble in your cooling system
2. Your thermostat stuck shut
I would bet on the thermostat stuck shut since it had never done it before.

Was it actually that hot or just the gauge saying that it was?? If the coolant temp seememd as usual, it could just be your gauge, One other idea is if the motor didnt seem to really be that hot, It could also be your sending unit..

i bet you a hundred bucks it was your gauge- mine does it all the time in fact all my gauges pretty much jsut do what they want-- but on the other hand a sticking thermastat is usually the cause of one time jumps like that
