Weird noise coming from Jeep

1998 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L SE, It has 131xxx miles and its making a weird noise only when the engine is under pressure while driving. not at idle or coasting.. It sounds like a baseball card in a spoke of a bicycle, and its not engine noise. Please help. We've determined its not drive shafts or differentials. its either the transfer case (NP231) or transmission (AX-5)

X2 on exhaust leak. I've not heard of a tranny/transfer sounding like baseball cards and working before.

I do have a exhaust leak but its been there for awhile, the noise only happens while there is load on the engine like its drive line issues.

That's your problem, there's more exhaust flowing through under load, and the leak is only getting bigger...

I never got back to this on the forum. It was my rear ring and pinion gear a tooth broke and went into my spider gears and messed some things up.
