The frame on my 97 looks pretty decent. My problem area is where the frame mounts connect to the tub. Aside from a new tub, I'm not sure what I can do for it.

My 02 is rusting at the steering box mount really bad water gets in there and just sits rusting it out. I have a buddy with a 97 different frame mount for the steering box his even has a hole in the bottom so it can drain. I wish jeep would have kept this but nope they had to change a good thing.

Could you close up the holes in your frame? To keep out all the mud and stuff??

what about adding instead of closing? can we just drill a hole underneath the frame where we want water to drain?

Yeah that's been done, but why can't you seal your frame up with thin sheet metal just enough to keep most of the mud out?

i like that idea too, wire brush the frame down and just a little weld to hold it there then paint/undercoat it back in

you have 3 choices..

1) do nothing. Great option for people who live in California and Arizona.

2) Seal it up 100%. Of course this is will not let any moisture out and it will still rust through...unless of course you are able to remove ALL corrosion currently on the inside of your frame, then paint and coat it completely. Good luck. You will also have to come up with another way of mounting a bunch of stuff to your frame...like your T-case skid.

3) Drill holes from the bottom. Flush out your frame every month or so and after you go wheeling. The inside of your frame will now be in the same or better condition that the outside.

I'm surprised nobody makes a pre-cut gusset-plate that could be welded to the outside (rear) of the frame to strenghten it BEFORE it gives way to rust.

If it started at the rear of the body-mount that's just behind the transfer case skid, it could extend back UP the curve of the frame to the spring-perch for the rear axle and encompass the area that cracks and pulls away, thereby fixing the problem for good.

Once the frame cracks and "moves" it would be pretty tough to get it back to the exact location to fix it, but if you perform this mod BEFORE any cracks happens, you'd buy your frame another 20+ years.

Anyone?
