I edited my earlier post after doing a search. Its in the PCM. Why do you think you have a voltage regulation problem? If the voltage is spiking up, it could be a bad ground or connection somewhere. If it goes up and stays up, I'd suspect the regulator.

I think it is my voltage regulator becaues My amp guage shows about 8amp while running but if I by pass the plug on the back of the altnator and hook it up strait to the battery it shows about 16amps

How are you hooking up your "amp guage" to check this? You checking amps or volts?

Connections need to be clean, clean, clean. If they are then you may very well have a problem with the PCM.

The alternator's voltage regulator is in the ECM but I would bet big $$$ your problem is not with that. If you're certain the alternator and battery are both ok, I'd be checking for a bad connection(s) somewhere. The voltage regulator has proven to be VERY reliable.

I just went round and round chasing down the same problem, turns out.........Bad ground at the battery. Check and recheck All of your grounds.

I had a similar problem with my 97 2.5. My "Check Gauges" light went on and I noticed that my voltmeter was suddenly pegged high. I pulled back into the driveway, made sure that I wasn't on fire, and then tried to start it again. Nothing happened.
Long story short, I had bad battery cables. They were pretty cheap to begin with and were in pretty bad shape. The alternator needed to work too hard to keep the battery charged. It was pushing high amps for too long, overheated and the ECU shut everything down. I removed and measured the original wires and I built some 4 gauge battery and ground cables from bulk cable and end links that I bought from Advance Auto. They cost about $25 for everything. You can also buy heavy duty ones online for about $100. Problem solved

no my battery cables are good I tested it and it is the voltage regulator so I am going to try to find an externial voltage regulator and just wire it up. instead of buying a new pcm

There's more to that wiring that could be the root cause than just the wires leading to the battery. I think you're being too quick and anxious to dismiss the wiring as a possibility. I REALLY doubt the VR in the PCM is the problem.
