Viper Elite Winches...thoughts?

I posted this in the General forum, and got literally no response at all. So, since I'm talking about something that's going on a TJ, I'm re-posting the thread here. The original thread is as follows:

Anyone running one of the Viper Elite series winches?

I know a lot of ATV guys swear by them, and they've got a pretty solid-looking unit. The prices look good, and they come with the Amsteel lines.

Any thoughts on these? Anyone got experience with them? I did a search and didn't find much.

As a slight addendum, does anyone think a 10,000 lb. winch to be underpowered for the job of extracting a Wrangler from whatever I bury it in?

I never even heard of them but ya, I think 10,000 lbs would be more than enough for a Jeep.

Never heard of Viper winches.
But yes, 10k is more than adequate. (8k is adequate...)

Moto Alliance - VIPER Recovery Winches & Accessories

A friend who stays current on the Toyota FJ forums mentioned them to me. Evidently, the reports are good...but I'd love to hear from someone here that's got some experience with them.

Didn't CouchRider just win one?

I wonder if he's used it yet?

I know that with winches, the general rule of thumb is you need to have a winch rated for twice what your vehicle weighs. I think that a 10,000 lb rating will be more than enough. I am also really interested to know how the viper elite compares...as I was seriously looking into buying one of these.

Somebody won one...I know Viper has an account on JF and they post from time to time. The 10K I've seen at $650 on sale. That's a lot for a winch that size...which explains part of my attraction.

They've given away two winches in the past couple months. They look like a pretty good unit. I don't know if someone that won something would actually get on here and say too much bad about it. But that's just my opinion.

I looked at one close up last week and I would say it had a low quality sort of cheap feeling to it in person, from five feet away it looks impressive.
I think if I were in a crunch for cash I would just buy a Champion, it seems about the same quality and its cheaper.
