VIN Number Decode
I bought a Jeep TJ to fix up and run both as a daily driver and on the trails. I looked at the VIN number and it shows the 10th number is a Y. The paperwork shows a 99 and the vin number decode I find shows a 2000 model. I am trying to find wiring for the engine and am not sure what year it actually is. I bought a 99 engine and if it is actually a 2000 it wont work. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Vin number
the first numbers are 1J4FA49S7YP. I know the last numbers are serial numbers. The guy insists he bought it new early 1999.
I live in Canada and am not sure how to get a build sheet as the jeep is still in the other guys name. I can not register it until it is running. First digit is where it is made. Second digit is Jeep Third is MPV Fourth is Gross Weight Fifth is Wrangler Sixth is Series Seventh is Body Type Eighth is Engine Ninth is Control Dight Tenth is Year Eleven is Plant Twelve through 17 is Serial Number. |

Looks like you have a 2000 by parts and 99 by paper.
This is for a GC, but Y is 2000 and X is 1999. Maybe for Y2K?? Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ - VIN decoding

The model year has little to do with the date of manufacture. 2000 models hit showrooms mid 1999. (my 03 was built in July 02)
The Title and REgistration tell you what year it is. |

my buddy also has one of these. We went to do his front brakes and figured out they are from a 2000 even though his is a 99. Different size rotors and stuff I guess.

[I don't think that is true in this case. His title says 99 but his VIN says Y. Y is 2000.]
Perhaps Canada or his Province registration works that way? By date rather than model year? [My 2004 suburban, has 2003 parts all over the engine. Coolant temp sensor to name one.] [my buddy also has one of these. We went to do his front brakes and figured out they are from a 2000 even though his is a 99. Different size rotors and stuff I guess.] Very common on first or last years of a model. |

2003 and 04 were neither 1st or last years of the model.
My 95 vette had 96 parts in it, again middle of the model years. If I were OP, I would first attempt to buy 2000 year parts b/c his VIN says it is a 2000.

Year built.
If it is a 99 or 2000. I just need to know how to identify the wiring and see what I need. The wiring from the dash to the fuse box is all there. Someone just unplugged the wires to PCM and removed it also the wires were unplugged that go to the engine. If it is a 99 I have the correct engine. The 99 engine I have has a distributor and not a coil pac. If this is a 2000 then it had a coil pack and no distributor. Either way I do not see how the engines will interchange. I was told it was a 99 and bought a 99 TJ PCM and a 99 Cherokee engine. If it is a 2000 then these wont work as far as I can tell as the change was between 1999 and 2000 models. Really confused.

2000 Jeep TJ.
I got the build sheet today and the TJ was built December 1999. Guess the guy did not know when he bought it. Now to try to use the 99 engine in it.

IF it was built in December 1999 then it is definitely a 2000 model. That was half way through the 2000 model year production.
