Look above your steering wheel, on the dash. Kind of awkward spot.

I've seen that one but there's generally more than one location, especially in vehicles made after 1990. For instance, my Cherokees have it on the dash, firewall, both fenders and a hidden one inside the A pillar....laser etching has become quite popular among automakers.

If you mean the white bar code stickers with the VIN on it then they are attached to all 'loose' panels as the go thru the factory ,, it's part of the inventory tracking system for assembly.
Look on the tailgate, underside of each door, firewall, fenders, .. each panel will have a sticker.
The true VIN # is on the dash above the steering wheel .. viewed from teh outside.

all carpet pieces
Tailgate
inside of rocker panel area on drivers side
firewall

passenger side rear wheel well
roll cage

No, I mean on my Cherokees the VIN is literally laser etched into the metal of the fenders, firewall and inside the A pillar as well as the white stickers on most all of the other parts. The sticker info is good to know and I'd forgot about that but I'm mainly referring to those in the metal or on metal tags.

A pillar next to drivers side windshield, it's printed on Vehicle Certifiation Label, which is on drivers side door shutface, and it is located somewhere on frame rail, I believe front of vehicle on frame. This is what it shows for an 02 TJ. Hope this helps!

I rephrased the original question so it was a little clearer. I don't currently own a TJ but I'm looking at three that have been totalled offroad.....I'd like to build one nice Jeep out of them IF and only if I can make the titling as painless as possible.
