Val 75w-140 limited slip Full Synv gear oil
Getting ready to brave diff service and swap cover to RockCrusher D44 this weekend. It has factory Trac-Lok that says to use friction additive but the auto store told me not to use additive with this gear oil.. The only additive they had said specifically don't use in Jeeps quadratrac. If I recall my 2002 Tj is not quadratrac. Anyone know if I still need additive with this Valvoline 75w-140 limited slip full synthetic gear oil? If so what brand of additive does most auto stores have that I should buy?

Read the back of the gear oil bottle. I'm almost postivie that most synthetic gear oils have the additives needed in them. However, don't quote me on this.

Almost every quality brand of gear oil includes the additives now. Even if you don't have the tracklok, the additives are a good thing.

PITA install.
well, this didn't goes as well as I had planned. I didn't have any trouble getting the old cover off and getting it cleaned.. While installing the new RockCrusher cover I got all the bolts in but 2. They where no where near close to alignment. So I had to wait for the RTV to setup before I removed it.. Then it was still to tacky to get it all cleaned off.. So now its sitting there waiting for it to cure so I can get it clean again.. Anyone got any suggestions on how to clean off fresh RTV? I know I can't leave it filmy and reapply it. I was able to reinstall the cover later last night with no sealant just to see if I could get all bolts in and tightened down.. I did but it took some effort.. Next ? How long do I have from the time I get the RTV applied to complete cover before I have to have it completly bolted to the axle?

Not sure on cleaning up fresh RTV. I'd probably try to use brake cleaner. You can spray that in the diff as well to clean up the gear oil so don't worry about getting it in there.
FYI when I first did my gear oil change I put on the RTV slapped the cover on, tigthened the bolts and filled it. 9k miles later it was seeping on the bottom of the cover, might of been from hitting it but not sure. So this time I actually read the directions. Your suspossed to put the RTV on the cover and hand tighten the cover to the diff. Or in your case tighten the bolts to the cover just touches. Let it cure for an hour and then tigthen the bolts down completely. Now you can fill it.

FWIW, the Valvoline isn't full synthetic, it's synthetic blend. At least at my AutoZone. The only full synthetic I saw was Mobil 1 at a lovely $8.19 a bottle.

valvoline durablend is semi-synthetic. not sure whether it has additive ... but ..
valvoline synpower is full-synthetic. 100% sure this contains a limited-slip additive (ie., no need to add friction modifer). and i quote from valvoline website: "Valvoline SynPower Gear Oil is recommended for use in axle applications requiring factory-fill or drain-and-fill levels of limited slip performance. Valvoline SynPower 75W-140 is also recommended for use where Ford M2C-192A, GM 12346140, Chrysler MS-8985 , or GL-5 SAE 75W-140 gear oil is specified. The addition of a supplemental friction modifier(Ford M2C-118-A, Chrysler MS-5630, or GM 1052358) *is not* required." |

The additive being referred to as needed for the Tracloc LSD is called a friction modifier. That Valvoline lube you're asking about has it already, as do most competing gear lubes, so no more of it is needed. And no your TJ does not have Quadratrac, which is only available in Grand Cherokees and very old CJs. The friction modifier additive is compatible with all Wrangler axles, whether they have lockers, limited slip differentials, or they are "open" with no locker or LSD.
