UPDATE: hi-amp alternater swap
Today my Dad and I swapped alternators on our TJs. There have been several threads lately about this but there was a bit of confusion on the earlier models. We both used Duralast alternators that we bought at Autozone. They easily bolted on with no fitment issues.
For my 98 w/ 4.0 : Autozone part #13387 136amp, is a DIRECT FIT. No changes are needed. This is an option for 1998 Dodge truck/Durango w/ 5.9 V8. Price was $147.00 For A 2003 w/ 4.0 : Autozone part #12328 160amp, is a DIRECT FIT. No changes are needed. This is for a 2004 Dodge Durango w/ 4.7 V8. Price was $121.00. As I mentioned, for a '98 and an '03, these were direct fits and a great upgrade for the money spent. ![]()

So what would fit the 06? Is it the same as the 03? What is the output of the stock unit?

My '04 4.0 has a 117amp stock alternator. I'd imagine its the same for the '06 if you have the same engine, not sure though.

Just to be certain, they wouldn't have been interchangeable, right? I mean, they looked different and you couldn't have put the 160amp on the '98 TJ, right?

03-06 4.0L Wrangler's should have the exact same setup. I'll probably being doing this before the end of the year myself. Just not a big fan of Auto-Zone's Duralast aka Duradead line of alternators/batteries. It does have a lifetime warranty though vs my stock unit lol.

good to hear.
Is the overall size of the alternators any larger than the stock TJ's?

Just for clarification, were those prices for alternators bought new or rebuilt?

It should be 97-02 and 03-06 for part compatibility.

New and rebuilt doesn't matter. On the rebuilt ones only the casing is reused, everything on the inside is all brand new. My question is will these fit the 4.0 and 2.4, or just the 4.0? I have an '04 SE and it has a 136 amp on it and it's starting to make noise, the AutoZone replacement is $180, can I get that 160 amp and put it in?
