turning off engine light

I removed my catalytic converter because it was broken and put in a straight pipe. Some people on here said that if you just leave the O2 sensor connected the engine light would stay off, but it didn't. If I unplug the O2 sensor the Jeep runs fine, but if I plug it in it doesn't run as well. I don't understand why the downstream O2 sensor is trying to control the engine but it is. I thought its only job was to tell when the cat was bad. I also heard about O2 sesor simulators but did not find any at Autozone or Napa.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the light to turn off?
thanks a lot

Part number 182-104052. Should work call them and find out. look at your o2 sensor real closely.

Why not let everone breathe better and just replace the Cat. Then you won have to buy the sim. and you will be legal.

Well with the cat removed the sensor thinks the cat is bad. You have no cat so it isn't doing its job, thus the computer tries to compensate for it to lower emissions. So you either need to put a cat back in (they really don't hurt your performance on a jeep) or get a simulator.

I would gladly do that, but not for the rip off of a price, and because of the fact that it would just break in a year.

Thanks for the link and the help everyone.
