I bought a wrecked 2006 wrangler and I want to put engine transmission and everything into my 1997 what do I need to beware of?? the 2006 has an automatic transmission, what about computer?? what all do i need to swap?? Thx
If either Jeep has a D44 rearend(or frontend if the 06 is Rubi), you'll want to use it. There was a minor electrical rewire in 03. I would try to use the 97 computer for simpler emissions, but it's all over my head.
Whats wrong with your 97's parts that make you want to switch them out? If they are perfectly fine I would just part out the 06' and get money for more mods!
all I really wanted was the auto trans and the engine, the 06 only had 22,302 miles on it when my 97 has 140,000 plus on it. most my mods are paid for I am sponsored by Trailmaster, Or-Fab, PAG, and pitbull tire
You can bring the 2006 engine over to the 97. I would suggest using all the sensor, distributor, etc from the 97... just swap out for a fresh block. The 06 intake/header is better designed than 97. You will go insane trying to get the 06 PCM over and working properly with your gauges, etc... Not to mention the 97 will have better fuel economy than the 2006 set up because of emissions.
Better yet, rebuild the 2006 with the 97 parts as long as the frame is straight. Would have much better resell value.

Swapping the manual trans for the auto, you might want to regear. The new 4 speed auto has an ultra low .69:1 overdrive ratio.
Also, I dont know a whole lot about the trans swap, but Id say that you need to use the computer from the 06, so that it can communicate to the auto trans. That or get your 97's computer reflashed.
I would swap over the long block only and skip the auto transmission. That's going to be waay too much trouble.
Unless you're rock crawling or something I don't think you'll be happy with the auto anyway. IMHO.
is the 97 a 4cyl and the 06 a I6???
I swapped a wreck 97 TJ I6 into my 97 TJ 4 cyl and it was not that bad, but you would have allot more work with the newer computer
