trying to pain tgalvanized shcakles.

Hmm, these shackles are becoming a magilla. Im trying to paint my galvinized shackles so I cleaned them off real good with dawn soap and primed them with regular old auto primer after they where dry and now the primer seems to be flaking right off. Well I can't paint over that so I'll strip off the paint with chemical stripper and start again. So whatya think coat them with a metal etcher like"metal ready" or something like that and then paint color? Any suggestions?

I've not tried it, but I've heard that paint will adhere better to a galvanized surface if you wipe it down with vinegar.

I have some old Warn D-rings that were galvanized finished, and wanted to snaz them up a little. I didnt prime them at all, as primer only sticks to bare metal. I used a can of red Krylon. 2 coats later they were awesome , even when I throw them around in my recovery/tool bag. Give 'er a try.

Krylon Fusion is the easiest paint I've ever worked with. I'll give that a try when I pick up some D rings. By the way, what size should I get? I've got a rock-it man bumper if that matters.

If you use those for recovery the paint is going to come off from the strap at somepoint. It'll just make a mess on the strap and the shackle will look worse half painted half not. Just my 2 cents. I did paint the pins as mine were orange and it kept coming off on my hands. However the paint is coming off that as well.

Ok, so I stripped the flakey primer off with a chemical stripper, treated them with POR15's "metal ready", washed them down again with soap and water then painted with rustoleum. Works fine now. thanks everyone!
