I have a 2003 Wrangler I6 manual with 83000 miles on it. It has just developed a squeak when I put it into gear. I have checked to see the exact action that is taken that initiates the squeak and this is what I found:
Depress the clutch only: no squeak
Release clutch: no squeak
Depress clutch and put in (any)gear: squeak quiet but continuous
Clutch depressed and remove from gear: squeak continues
Release clutch: squeak stops
Clutch, put in gear, begin acceleration: squeak gets a little louder then stops when begin to drive, squeaks a little going from first to second, then no discernable further squeaking.
The squeak showed up suddenly, did not start small and get worse.
The Jeep shifts fine and there seems to be no problems with the operation, just the squeak.
Sounds a little like a belt squeak.
Any idea what could cause this?
Did some further investigation and sound is coming from somewhere around the bellhousing.
