Transmission Slips!!
I have a 97 TJ, inline 6, 3 speed auto transmission, approx. 83,000 miles. I was driving it yesterday, and noticed the following problem(s). When I stopped at an intersection, and then restarted, the transmission would hesitate before slipping into gear. Also, there was a noticeable time lag on upshifts. Would this be something as simple as a fluid/filter change, or do I have some serious problems?

It could be nothing more than it needs a band adjustment plus an ATF and filter change. Those 3-speed auto trannies are nearly bulletproof.
