Transmission noise when cold
Hello,
Sorry I don't have my profile together yet. I'm working on it. That said... I'm having a problem with my 98 TJ manual speed 6cyl. It's freaking cold in Wisconsin right now and today when I was driving I kept getting a high pitched whirring / squealing noise from the transmission. It would happen in any gear, and would get higher in pitch the faster the RPM's. As soon as I pop the clutch in and disengage the transmission the noise stops. Any ideas on what it is? I don't have the tools or setup to take a look at it in the middle of winter. Think I can drive it to a shop without damaging it? Maybe I can just pretend not to notice and it'll go away.... Any help would be appreciated Thanks. Now.. back to work on that profile.... -nick-

I noticed what sounds like the same thing you're describing in the last few days of cold weather. At first I thought perhaps the brake shoes were dragging a smidge, but as I ran through the gears, it became obvious that it was transmission related. With mine, the sound goes away fairly quickly, so I'm assuming it's just a different sound due to cold lubricant.
I'd certainly be happy to hear a more expert opinion though. Adam

Did you check the fluid level?
What type of fluid are you using in your Jeep?
