Tranny fluid change

so based on my name, we all know i have a 99 TJ, its a sport.

i have the I-6 and the manual.

Was wondering if anyone here has changed the tranny fluid in one of these and how easy/annoying it was. The cheapest ive heard from a dealer is 160 bux to have it done, and i really dont feel like paying for that. Plus i like learning how to do crap on my own.

its going on almost 80k now, so im guessing it needs some TLC.

EDIT::

Oh and is there anything i should be doing to the transfer case while im at it?

The drain for it is on the the side of the passenger-side near the bottom, towards the front of the transmission. The fill hole is on the driver's side, half-way up. Fill it until it starts overflowing out of that hole. Be careful what gear lube you use, not all are suitable for your AX-15 transmission. I recommend Redline MT-90 (a synthetic) which you can get from www.summitracing.com/ and read about at www.redlineoil.com/. It holds approx. 3 1/3 quarts so you'll need to buy 4 quarts. This is an easy one-banana job.

Never having changed ANY oil in my life, I did both diff's (with seals), transmission, transfer case, and motor based on the info on this site. It's not that bad honestly. Plan plenty of time, get all your materials before hand (took me a few trips to find everything I needed), and go slow. I'm sure I saved a ton of money.

It's SUPER easy and will take, at most, 45 minutes of your time. That's with drain time, putting new lube in, and any trouble you may have with the drain and fill screws. Never pay anyone to do your lube changes....everything is so easy.

my tcase takes ATF. I have a 98 TJ and my 92 YJ takes atf too. There is a sticky with the fluids and quantities needed. I found that very helpful.

I use Royal Purple Synchromax in my tranny and t-case. I suppose you could run it in the diffs as well. It's great stuff.

Pretty much any good quality ATF. Mercon, ATF+3, ATF+4 (way more expensive), etc. If it says ATF on the bottle, the 231 t-case used in all TJs is happy with it. It's only the automatic transmissions that are fussy about the kind of ATF they get.

Synchromax is not a GL-5 so it does not meet the specs required for axles/differentials. Neither does it meet the recommended specs for the TJ's 231 t-case which specifies ATF. It would be fine for gear-based transfer cases but the 231 t-case used in the TJ is chain-based, not gear based.
