Towing Shopping list...Please Help.

I would like to pull my New ATV to local and distant places to ride. What do I need?

So many choices on Quadratec for hitch and all I haven't picked up a trailer yet but will based on y'all options.

What class do I need?

Whats a good priced hitch cost?

My Quad is 500lbs and about 6 and half feet long.

Class 1 hitch <= 2000 lbs
Class 2 hitch <= 3500 lbs
Class 3 hitch <= 5000 lbs.

Class 2 or 3 is your best, but you won't be pulling 5k lbs with a TJ. Class 2 or 3 hitch with 2 inch reciever is what you want. A quad on a light duty trailer will ride fine behind your tj. Just keep in mind that once to get to around 2k and beyond with a TJ you really pushing it. Poor brakes and SWB make for a very poor tow rig.
It is very easy to just load up a trailer and take off without thinking about weight.

towing

A hitch for only pulling 500 lbs cant be much, you usually over rate the hich, so instead of buying a hitch for 500, buy one with a greater load capacity, also the tounge weight comes into play, the downforce on the tounge, if the trailer weight is centered, it only causes a little weight on the tounge.

Now if you have an auto trans. you need to think about a trans cooler, you can get away without one, but the trans will last longer with one, in fact the cooler the trans runs the better, I plowed snow with a YJ for 8 years, I had a trans cooler and never ever had a trans problem, so consider a cooler if you have an automatic.

you will also need a trailer light plug, I hear Napa has a plug and play, system or you can just get a pair of trailer wires( check the trailer you are going to buy to see what type plug is on it before buying a plug set up.

After that all you need do is change your rear end grease if you are going to be towing if not you will burn up the bearings,(cheap insurance) chrysler recomends 140w for towing, get synthetic lube, it keeps cooler....I'm sure someone else has some ideas for you, this is all I can think of now, good luck with you project

I have an 05 that I bought used and it has a receiver hitch on it like the one pictured. I am getting rid of it soon in order to put on a rear bumper w/ receiver built in.

My existing receiver is tucked in under the factory bumper as tight as it can be but it still hangs too low. It screws up your departure angle AND it looks like crap.

Just my .02!

Consider an integrated bumper/hitch, rather than a hitch that hangs down. It'll preserve your clearance. Keep in mind that most of them are not technically tow-rated. The Olympic is:

I've got an 06 Unlimited Rubicon and I am NOT a hardcore offroader. I've got a Hidden Hitch like the one you pictured. I've dragged it in the dirt a couple of times but only knew it because it was dirty. It's a good setup. My hitch is a Class IV which is what I have always purchased over the years including a YJ and another TJ that I still have.

You will never have to worry about the hitch. Period. I'm not comfortable with the hitch integrated bumper. I haven't had a bumper hitch since the 60's and I'll sure as help not use one to tow now.

I pull a 4,000 pound boat with mine and have no problem. Legally I'm overloaded, but if you drive with some sense you won't have a problem with your ATV.

I have had this bumper/hitch for a couple of years
and highly recommend it. Looks cleaner, doesn't
cost mucho buko, and as stated will preserve your
clearance. No problems towing my bass boat (approx 800 lbs),
or on occasion my motorcycle on a trailer.

Bumper hitches aren't the same as what you probably had in the 60's, though those styles still exist. These bolt to the same spots as your hidden hitch, as well as the stock bumper, but they're mounted higher up than the hidden hitch. Additionally, something like that Olympic has gone through all the DOT testing that is required to rate the hitch - the exact same tests, etc, as the hidden hitch you use.
