Tow Hitch wiring

Does the TJ have a wiring plug in the wiring harness that one can connect to for the tow hitch?

In the past I have always tied into the factory harness behind one of the tail lights. Is there an easier way?

Thanks guys!

That is the location to plug in to - behind the passenger side tail light.

You may find the connector that you separate, behind the passenger tail light, to be wrapped in a foam insulation tape. Just a heads up.

Since you show a South Africa address, you may have what is called a built up export. Does your Jeep have amber turn signals in the rear? If so, the standard US trailer harness will not be a "plug and play". Give us a response about the amber.
Your initial post indicates past experience with adding trailer connectors. All the wires you need are at the rear of the Jeep. Also, is yours right hand drive?
The Jeep dealer may have an accesory trailer harness available. The US harnesses are readily available from many US sources. The answer to the above questions (amber turn and RHD) are important.
If you decide to tie in, it should be fairly easy.
Color codes should be as follows(assuming amber turn rear lens):
Brown/Red stripe = Right Turn
Dark Green/Red Stripe=Left Turn
Black/Yellow stripe = Tail lights
Violet/Black Stripe = Back-up
White/Tan Stripe = Brake Lamps

HTH
Yes amber turn signals and RHD. You all answered my question thanks!
There is no easy (Cost effective) plug in – so splicing the wires and tying in to the tail light cluster is the correct way! Our Jeep dealerships has the “plug and play” system but for US$460.00!!!
I have fitted about 12 tow hitches to TJ’s and I have always tied into the tail light cluster. I use the same system as the KC Daylighter system uses. That little blue plastic splicing kit. The Toyota and Land Rover has a dedicated plug for tow hitch wiring and I thought the Jeeps might have the same that I am missing.

B.T.W Our globes are all 5watt (21 for brake lights) and our lenses are all bigger and further away from the globes. The front side blinkers have bubbled lenses and the tail light lenses are a half an inch thicker.

Thanks for the help!

I assume South African trailers also utilize Amber turn signals on the trailers too. In the US, most trailers, like many vehicles, utilize only a two filament bulb with red lenses. The tow vehicles with amber turn signals have a converter to convert the three wire/filamemt system to a two wire/filament system. One of the filaments is for tail lights, the second is for stop/turn signal. The turn signal switch has internal circuitry to determine stop or turn depending on TS switch position.
Out of curiosity, what is the part number for the dealer part?
Do you have headlight levelers too? Another not available in the US item!

I was reading the section in the FSM about headlight levelers. Man, that would be nice when towing a trailer with ~300-400lbs of tongue weight.

It is actually just a gimmick! I have never used mine. The small motors are also prone to breakage and are $$$$$$! It has 4 settings 0 to 3. You only notice a difference between setting 0 and 3 the others are a waist. Just another useless thing that can break.
