Totally confused about Headlights/Foglights
The headlights that came with my 1999 TJ Sport are pretty crappy. The Low beams are sort of OK but the highs are very dull.
From what I've read, the two contenders for replacement are either the Silverstars or the Delta H4 conversion, which I keep getting 404's for at Quadratech. Are there others I should be looking at and where should I buy them from? Secondly, for some reason, I don't have foglights on my Jeep though I have a in cab switch. What would be a good pair to get, keeping in mind I'd rather not wire in a second battery? What other wiring considerations do I need to make?

Not sure about the fog lights....but I went with the IPF/Fatboy combo and it is night and day difference. I recommend this because I have it and LOVE it. I cannot comment for any other conversion.

Look under you fenders. If there are some wiring harnesses tucked up there you found your fog light wiring. Just buy a set of 55w lights, no modds required.

im using teh Hella DOT conversion with silverstar bulbs, absolutly NO complaints! KC makes a 55w factory replacement foglight that i think has the factory plug on it also...

IPF can be bought from Northridge4x4. that's where I got mine.
http://www.northridge4x4.com/products.php?cat=76 I like the personalized service I get from Northridge 4x4 instead of dealing with some huge corporate entity and dealing with multiple people that just sit in front of a computer all day and enters orders, and that they are somewhat local helps too!!

x3 on IPF's from Northridge 4x4. As far as fog lights go, I really like my KC Hi-Lites 130 watt slimline fog lights. The kit comes with a wiring loom and relay to control the current but is pretty simple to hook up to the existing fog lamp switch.

OK, I found my factory foglight wires, and confirmed they worked when I hit the foglight switch.
at the front of the jeep, the connector is cutoff about 1/2" into the wire on the light side. Is this a standardized connector so that I can just grab a new one with the foglights? Is there already a relay on here or am I looking for a wire fire? The wire is about the same gauge as the headlight wire |

If you are using fog lights with the same wattage as the stock lights (55 watts) then you should be able to hook them up to the existing wiring. Any more wattage and I'd run a relay. Part of the problem is that the full current runs through the fog light switch and pushing more wattage is a wire fire waiting to happen.

The factory fog wiring uses a relay, and the full current sure doesn't go through the switch. But the wires themselves are only sized for 55watts safely. Pipeline, you can simply butt-connect wires to the factory wires you found, no real need for trying to duplicate the factory connectors. Separate battery? Not needed. |

If the wires are cut on the light side( i think that was how I read that) just butt splice into the wires after the connector, that way you won't have to cut wires if you need to remove the lights for anything.

They are cut to about 1/2" long on the light end of the connector on the fender side. Both sides of the connector are there, but the one I need to splice to is just too short

I would then unplug it, take it in the garage, strip the ends, solder some wires to them, slip shrink tube over the joints and shrink it down. Instant new harness!
(But 1/2" should be enough to crimp connector onto.) |

Before I bought my TJ someone had removed the factory lights. I've replaced mine with KCs and love them. I agree with all said above - just stay under the 55Watts. The factory lights DO have relay and obviously the full currrent is NOT going through the dash switch. As far as the connector, if you really must have a connector it is a simple 2 wire auto connector that you can buy at auto stores (female / male ends). I wouldn't worry about finding an exact replacement for the OEM one. A simpler solution is butt splicing or soldering and then using heat shrink. How many times do you actually intend to unplug your driving lights? Hmmmmm. Never perhaps? Just my 2 cents.
