Torx Bolt Problem

Did the search, couldn't find anything. The torx bolts on my windshield are not removing at all. It is so bad that I twisted the torx bit in half last night. Any suggestions? I am trying to install a light bar.

best bet would be use an impact driver. you can pick one up at any hardware or auto store. i used a dewalt impact and just put all my weight into it. the key is to put enough force into it so the wrench does not back out. good luck.

Try spraying it with PB blaster not sure if it well help though. Get a stronger Torx bit and an impact wrench, or a long pipe...

I'm having the same problem with those torx bits trying to put a kargo master rack on. They are impossible to get off by hand and I am afraid of stripping the bolts with the impact drill. Is it best to get them professionally taken out?

The trick with torx bolts is to keep the tool straight and square, and make sure the hole is empty (remove rust, paint, dirt, etc).
Use the best bit you can buy, and remember leverage is your friend. Try to get someone to help you keep the bit square to the bolt. One you get the bolt moving, spray some PB blaster down the side of the head (so it gets to the threads).
When I removed bolts from my YJ hinges I thought they were welded in there. I used the method above and they came out OK

I had the same problem. Those bolts have loctite on them so pb blaster doesnt really work until you get them moving. I think the best advice is to have two people, one to push straight into the bolt, the other to turn the wrench. Even still, mine were in there so hard with the loctite that the bolt eventually just sheered right off, I had to drill it out. I have a 2001 though, so depending on how long it has been in there might be a factor, I don't know. I just know that I NEVER want to mess with those things again.

yea get one of these:

You hit it with a hammer, and it spins and turn, the hammer provides the force inwards while turning it at the same time

If they are new bolts that havent come out yet, try and break up the paint with a flathead screwdriver to make it easier. Took me half an hour to remove the bolts for my KC lights.

remember to cover the area your welding around well!!! I had to lay down both sets of my fire turnout gear to cover the hood, windshield frame, windshield...a little piece of weld or getting close to the paint with a hot torch will make a pretty rainbow colored spot in your paint...

there's these bits that are used for removing rounded out screw heads, you might be able to use those if your torx head is rounded out.

Not strong enough for the job. If they're badly rounded I would carefully drill them out and retap the holes

Invest in a good bit. I purchased a T55 torx from SnapOn after breaking several cheaper ones on the rear seat belt bracket. It cost me a few bucks, but worked great.
