Torque converter or lock up solenoid?

When I am at a stop my jeeps pull hard like on the gas. When I let off the brake it will idle up to almost 20 mph. This is real bad in 4lo in reverse. I have 32" tires and 3:07 gears. I need to change out the gears but I am real worried what it would be like with lower gears. I think that it a torque converter with a broken spring but not too sure. Tranny guy says could be. It also bucks hard when shifting from rev to drive or drive to rev. Other then this tranny shifts fine with no other problems. If I do replace the torque converter what stall speed should I run? Is there more then one option for the tranny. fyi 99 tj with 4.0 auto

I'm not sure what your problem is, but if the tc lockup wasn't letting go the engine would stall when you come to a stop... so I wouldn't suspect the solenoid unless there is also an internal problem with the converter that's not letting it lockup fully.

Don't worry about your axle gearing, auto's can be hard to stop with lots of gear, but your jeep doesn't really qualify for that. I wouldn't worry about it until you're running at least 4:1 in the t/case, regardless of the axle gearing.

Either way, the jeep isn't a race-car... if you replace the torque converter for some reason, stick with the stock stall unless you're also replacing the engine. High reving engines that don't make torque down low call for a higher stall, whereas you'd want a lower stall with a diesel that gets it just off idle. The stall speed in your trans was chosen specifically to work with your 4.0's power band.

If your mechanic recommends using a different stall speed to fix your problem, take it to a different guy.

I will pull the tranny myself just wanted to know if there was a better stall rate than the stock one? The torque converter locks and unlocks just fine on the freeway. Just tryin to get the to stop and stay stopped!
