topless jeep -- your experience?

Hi guys,

I am a jeep newbe. I just removed my hardtop and set up the soft top last weekend. It's becoming so hot these days and I really want to fold down the soft top.

However, some friends are saying it's unsafe, that my stereo or other staff might get stolen. I just want to share some of your experience, how unsafe do you think to park your topless jeep somewhere for couple of hours?

Thanks in advance!

There is always the chance of some lowlife stealing out of your jeep. I drive mine all summer without the top and have only lost a handheld spotlight once. Just ALWAYS be sure to park it in the open where people would be seen stealing out of it.

I park my jeep topless all the time. To me, it's no different than having the top on with a soft top. A word of advice, don't keep anything valuable in it, and NEVER lock the doors. It will only encourage theives to slash your windows. Yes, you can simply unzip the windows, but theives are typically stupid/ lazy, and will just slash your windows if the door is locked.

I always park with my top and doors off. I bought my TJ last year and it came with an alarm system. It is motion sensored so if someone sits in anyone of the seats... or rocks the jeep at all it goes off. I know it isn't safe but having the alarm makes me feel safer

To me, the joys of driving my Jeep without the top on or with a soft top FAR outweigh the possible risks of having the stereo stolen. Where I live, it's not a big risk but someone living in a high-crime area may not want to.

A few things I strongly believe in: Never leave anything in your Jeep out in plain sight that would tempt someone to break in or slash your soft top. Never lock your doors when the soft top is on since that invites getting your soft top slashed. Get a radio with a removeable face plate since that will discourage many thieves.

Your friends are jealous they don't have a Jeep. Don't leave anything in there to get stolen and you have nothing to worry about. I leave mine top down all the time. Theres nothing like driving around topless and doorless. Ya just can't beat it.

We live in a culture of fear where everything left somewhere is stolen, and everyone is supposedly just itching to get inside your Jeep and take your stuff. It's not true. Most people are good and don't steal.

I have left all kinds of stuff in my Jeep with the top down including tons of coins in the console, and no one has ever taken anything over the last year and a half.

I don't live in the Ghetto, but folks pretty much seem to respect others' space.

However, it would be really healthy to assume anything left in your Jeep could be taken, and to mentally surrender it before you leave it there. Just don't leave anything unreplacable in it.

i leave mine open all the time as well. there is only so much worrying you can do before it ruins all the fun.
if you have an aftermarket radio, take the faceplate off and at very least throw it in the console or glove box.
i'm not saying not to have any regard for your belongings in your jeep, just don't let worrying about it too much kill the jeep experience.
if someone wants to break into your jeep or take something from your open jeep, they will find a way.
i've got aftermarket stuff galore in my jeep right now (stereo, recovery, etc.) and and i've never had anything stolen. the blazer i traded in for my TJ was broken into twice with the same stuff in it that i have in the jeep, and the blazer is completely sealed up...no soft top or open vehicle there.

Yeah, I agree with what's been said for sure. I have an alarm and I don't lock my doors with the soft top. I don't leave anything of value in plain view.....or even in the console really. Always take your faceplate off your deck and if you've got a loud stereo (i.e. subs etc. like I do) don't "show off" near where you live or any places where you park regularly (school or work)......this only encourages would be thieves (ask me how I know ).

That being said.......don't worry about it. The fun you'll have with the top and/or doors off will far outweigh the little bit of worry you feel when parking it!

Just to re-emphasize what others have said.....I go topless and doorless in the fine weather as well, and have had a few things stolen. But certainly not the stock stereo (not sure if you've upgraded stereos).

I've learned not to keep anything of value in it while she's parked. There is always the lame chance that some yo-yo will throw a milkshake at the dash just for fun; So it's a good idea to foster good karma in all areas of your life.....

Cheers,
M

My rule, don't keep anything I don't want to get stolen in my Jeep.

If you do not have one, get the add-a-trunk (or anything like it) Leave NOTHING in plain view (to include loose change) don't make a big process out of putting the stuff in the back when you get where you are going. Have a bag with you, when you arrive, place everything in the bag (while you are still in the Jeep) then just put it in the back and lock-up - walk away.
The rest of it is common sense (parking under lights, don't park in out-of-the-way places etc etc)

I had talked to a cop the other day when my gf has her stock rim stolen off her scion tc. They tried to take the other one, but I think they couldn't get the jack out so they just threw it back on (the lugs were half way off). Anyways the guy told me that there are more crimes on lighted streets then dark ones. Reason being is he says that people figure stuff won't get stolen on a lighted street, plus I say that its easier not to get caught since you don't have to be out there with a flash light. My gfs rim was stolen right under the street light outside her house.

Im on my 3 jeep and went from small city to big city. I left all of them topless countless times w/out issue. That was until about 3 weeks ago. The AZ heat got to me, so I wanted my AC and finally put my top back up, only to have 2 knuckle head teenages not only break into my rig, but slash, then unzip my plastic, only to find out THE DOORS WERE UNLOCKED!

The 1 time I dont take my stereo out, and leave my CDs in the jeep and it gets hit. Although, as violated as I felt, I was just happy that they didnt cut the top, or steal the car.

Karma...they'll get theirs. The police have the cell phone...yeah the morons took off running dropping all types of things with their prints on it, knife, cell phone, screw driver etc. IDIOTS! oh well!

Dont leave ANYTHING in your jeep! and leave it dirty...oh my 1 other sure fire way to keep people from hitting my rig was to leave a pair of dirty drawers in plain view...no one wants any part of that
Happy jeepin!

Topless Jeep Experience...

Hmmm... well my topless jeep experience left me with sunburnt nipples... but i'm better now

sorry i couldn't resist.

seriously if you leave something in your jeep, top down, top up, or hard top... if someone wants it that bad... it is as good as gone. sadly that is just how some people are

Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil, that true love never dies. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in.
