TJ Vs. Wrangler

Whats the difference? When shopping for parts they separate the two. I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler 6 cyl, not sure what I have?

I ask because I bought a fog light kit and there are two sets of instructions, one for a TJ and the other says 98-00 Wranglers. I dont know which wiring diagrams to use because it wants me to splice some wires and they each tell me to splice different ones.

Wranglers are in 2 models YJ and TJ.

:Edited YJ Dates.
YJ was from 87 (I think to 95 - there was no 96 Wrangler)
TJ is the Wrangler model from MY97-present.

So a 98-00 Wrangler would indeed be a TJ. You can have a Wrangler and NOT have it be a TJ - it can be a YJ.

Make sense?

What year is your Jeep?

A 2000 is a TJ (round headlights). I'm not sure, but I believe they do not use the model name 'wrangler' in Canada, they just call them 'TJ's", to add to the confusion ...

Yup, the YJ came in 87 or 88, the TJ in 97. All are Wranglers, but Canadian units are not called Wranglers, they just use the YJ and TJ names.......but they are all the same.

I love using the CJ, YJ, TJ references around the dealers. Sometimes I get the funniest looks from those guys. They almost act like I don't know what I'm talking about. Guess I should've been Canadian, eh!

Cheers,
Kev

Wranglers are called TJ's or YJ's in Canada because Ford has the propietary rights to the name Wrangler in that country. There the same vehicle just a different handle. I'm sure someone will post if I'm wrong and correct me.

Let's not forget the newest addition. You can have an '04/05 L J Wrangler.

Others call it the unlimited.

Maybe the instructions for the TJ are canadian with a few "eh's" thrown in to make sense to them. And for Americans they left it as a Wrangler.

I thought it was Chevrolet that used the Wrangler name...I remember the Chevy Wrangler pickups in the mid to late 70's...or was it the early 80's?

Is is probably because of wiring changes in the TJ's throughout the years. You might want to call the fog light mfg. and ask them to clarify.

All 1997 and newer U.S. Wranglers are TJs. All 1995 and older Wranglers are YJs. There was no 1996 model year Wrangler produced. Um, to answer why there was no '96 Wrangler... the '97 Wrangler TJ was originally slated to be a '96 but production delays prevented that so it was brought out as an early-release '97 Wrangler TJ. The '95 Wrangler YJ's production was continued into the '96 model year but it was never officially released as a '96 model year Wrangler.

Getting Savvy...

When you have a choice, buy American.
