TJ starter HELP!!!!!

Hey guys I have a 99 TJ Sahara 4.0l auto and when it's cold outside and I go to start it the starter engages, turns the motor for a split second then I'm guess by the sound shoots past the flywheel and winds up like a starter that's not enguaging and when u let of the ignition u can hear the starter winding down and then "chunk" hits the flywheel again. I have to repeat that several times before it will actually start the jeep. Warm weather or warmed up jeep from driving no problem starts great. What is going on??? I have tryed shimming the starter out quite a bit and nothing seems to help.

The sounds it's making when the starter drive teeth hit the flywheel after it slips loose and comes back into the flywheel are bad and I'm sure it's just a matter of time till things start breaking so I really need some help to fix this issue

Thanks for the help

Not sure if this is the same issue, but I'll pitch in. my 97 2.5l had a similar problem, turned out the starter was falling off the jeep. Not entirely sure if you have the torx head bolts on the starter like I did on mine, but Harbor Freight has a whole set of sockets just for it. Got mine for $5. I tightened the bolts down, and never had another problem like that...

Good luck dude, starter issues are a PITA.

Nope, the 4.0 has a different (better in my opinion) bolt set upand I've made sure it's all tight, thanks for the input though....

The starter bendix is shot. Change the starter.

While your at it look at the flywheel teeth and make sure they are still in good shape.

/\ /\ /\ /\ What he said. Sounds like your starter is going out on you, mine is in the beginning stages itself. Good thing is that starters are really easy to change out, just make sure you unhook the battery and don't blow yourself up

Thank you guys.... Is it cheaper to rebuild the starter or not worth it?

if you can it might help to take a picture or two of the starter gear and the ring gear on the TC.

It would only be a lifetime warranty worth getting if they paid you to do the swap. But, if they did that, they would then sell starters worth owning.

I would want them to pay for my gas and time to exchange the starter... It takes longer to drive to the auto parts store than to change one.

Life with Christ can be explained like a Jeep...
Being in the Word... grows your tire size.
Prayer... gains more ground clearance.
Fellowship... Is like having a good spotter.

The more of these you have... the easier it is to get over obstacles in your path.

You've obviously never watched me change out a starter.
