Guess that is what the spacer is for that came with the fan.
I will run it tomorrow and check back then.

You also need to poke around and see if you can source a larger fan blade. Max spacing is the shroud no more than 1" from the tips of the blades and it looks like you are slightly past that. A 1" larger fan would get you more air movement.

So whats the verdict on the fan for a 98...I am very interested in doing this to my 98 Sahara...Does the fact that the fan is smaller than the shroud make that much of a big deal...

Somebody needs to measure the older TJ fan. Is it a 19 inch fan? If so I was looking @ Astro vans when I grabbed my explorer fan. The Astro uses an 11 blade fan that looks to be a 19 inch fan.

Yes, it's a big deal. The fan should be inside the shroud at least 3/4" and no more than half the width of the fan blade.
The shroud is the magic that makes it all work. Poor shroud design equals overheating even with a big fan that moves lots of air.

^^^I agree. Make this a Sticky.
I'd like to say thanks to Chris for putting this info out. It already appears that its going to give a lot of folks a viable option for getting more air through the radiator than anything that was available before without breaking the bank. The best part is that from first reviews, it actually seems to work and is a great improvement for those with cooling issues.
Thanks again!! :cheers 2:
Damn!!! all these posts in the time it took to type this!!!!

I looked up a fan for a 96 Astro van with a 4.3 motor. Its an eleven blade fan with a 20 in diameter.

Did this Monday night after getting the parts (15 min. job). Dorman 9 blade fan 620-112 at advance auto for $26.99 and the torqflo clutch 922793 at autozone for $59.99 – couldn’t get both at either place so twice the running (go figure). No overheating problems with my 2004 RME 4.0 but I saw the word “quieter” and said to myself “that’ll work”. It was easy getting the mopar fan off because of its weird spacing but putting the new dorman in was trickier & I really did not want to gouge up the radiator fins so I took the 4 bolts out of the shroud. Gave me enough wiggle room with the shroud still in place but able to be moved around. Result: fan is way quieter and sucks enough air in from the front to hold a towel in place like chris142 already mentioned. This got me to thinking about you guys saying it’s louder or doesn’t hold the towel – you may want to check & see if you mounted the fan backwards as it seems like it’s possible to do that – I don’t want to take mine off to check if true but my new fan did have “front” engraved on it and that’s the side I put the clutch on. By the way, my new clutch came with 4 M6-1.00 x 16 screws with lock washers – just make sure you don’t over torque them – watch the lock washer flatten out and tighten just til the bolt is firmly snug. Thanks for the inspiration chris142.

my oem fan seems to measure 18" exactly at its widest point - that is for he 4.0 - if you meant the 4-banger, nevermind.

I got the exact same parts and mine is noisier than stock when I step into the gas hard. Sounds like a Mac truck starting off. I may go find a Ford fan and see how that sounds. Check out my pics on page 4 and see if that's how yours is. I think I put "front" towards the radiator. Maybe that's my problem.
