That's funny. . UV durability between the two isn't that different, BC/CC does have an added protection to UV, but if you properly take care of your paint (polish/wax) you aren't going to have any problems.

And don't think Florida makes any difference. Ever been to Colorado?

My 2002 Audi A4 had lived in Massachusetts it's entire life, until I moved to Orlando in 2009. Within 2 months, my paint began to show damage on the roof and trunk. I couldn't afford to fix it at the time, so I let it be and dealt with the look. I moved back to Boston this June, and finally was able to get the problem fixed. It was SO bad, that the clear coat was actually separating from the paint layer, due to the strength of the Florida sun.

The first photo is of the paint damage that was incurred by the Florida sun.

The second is of the new paint and clear coat (built from the metal up) that cost me $2,000.

The Florida sun is a B**CH.

If we're going to compare the sun, Colorado is worse because we're at altitude.

Maybe next time you should wax your roof and your paint won't dry up and cook itself.

Thank you, We don't have the rust issues (unless you live on the beach) but trust me the sun will eat a paint job. There are just more days of intense sun here in a year than most places (hence the sunshine state nickname) and for dark colors that absorb that heat it's only a matter of time single stage or BC/CC before it peels. No doubt that keeping it in the garage or shaded parking or wax coats help. But sooner (for a single stage) rather than later it is going to be an issue. My wife bought a new black mustang gt in 05' and just this year we had it repainted. Because of the rear spoiler being faded to a light gray color on top and issues on the hood. That's a factory paint job and it stays in the garage when ever possible.

I rattle canned some stripes on my Jeep's hood a while back. I used gloss black Krylon ( I think it was Rust Tough), I like the nozzles they use. Then wet sanded it and am surprised how nice it came out. Although we will see how it stands up to UV, especially without a clear coat. And although cheap, it would take a good amount of time to wetsand a whole Jeep.

sun intensity

I've lived in Florida and Colorado and in my experience it wasn't even close - Florida sun is more intense and damaging- by a long shot.

If your factory paint is in any kind of shape at all, leave it alone.

otherwise, expect a life of maybe 2-3 years looking good for a 'cheap' paintjob... meaning under 2 grand.

Taking the outside of a Jeep to bare metal, priming, basecoating, and clearcoating costs about 5 grand to do right... by which I mean scraping damaged seam sealer out and replacing it, and body work on the dozens of tiny dings you Jeep has... whether you notice 'em or not now, you would with fresh paint.

And Freeskier... distance from the equator has a lot more to do with it than altitude does.

Your Audi roof damage has nothing to do with Florida sun.... that's a bag mark from plastic sheeting being left on a wet car... that's what happens. Trust me I work in a body shop and that's exactly what we call bag marks. Nothing to do with the sun whatsoever.

Try a local tech school one around here has an autobody class that paints cars, my not be show car quality but they do turn out good and you only need to buy the material i believe.

Thanks everyone. Body is pretty good however would like to change color to a dark blue. Hood has several like hundreds of cracks and a couple spots where the sun has broken down the clear coat.

I am currently changing the color on mine from green to black. One piece at a time with a rattle can. Fenders and doors are done. This weekend it's the hood and tailgate. It's kind of a pain in the butt and who knows how long it will last, but it's cheap, gives me a reason to be outside on the weekends and teaches me some of the in-outs of paint. I have a compressor and spray gun that I will use eventually, but I just wanted to see how a rattle-can paint job would look. I gotta tell ya, after wet-sanding and polishing, it looks pretty darn good for now.

Someone did their entire jeep (red) on here when I first joined this site, but I can't seem to find the thread.

I've painted fender flares and other items with a rattle can and they look pretty good. Just hard to get it even.

Listen, as*****, this has nothing to do with whether or not the roof was waxed. If you had READ my post, you would have learned that it was the clear coat SEPARATING from the paint layer... meaning it was UNDER what wax would have affected. I brought this to 15 different paint shops, NONE of which had ever seen the problem. The Audi dealership itself had never seen the problem. This is more than just a sweet little neglect of washing and waxing the car.

You need not be so quick to descend on my problem, as you have no f****** idea what happened.

I'm aware of the bag marks problem. That may well have been the start of this problem, but seeing as the paint markings didn't appear until 8 years after the car was purchased, I do stand by the fact that it was the Florida sun that brought out the real damage. Literally, it was within 2 months of me moving to Orlando that the problem appeared. The wax film of the bag may have been left on and seeped into the clear coat a decade ago, but it was not until the intense sun at the equatorial line baked it that the damage appeared.

Difference of opinion. I don't buy the sun thing. The oldest vehicle my family has is a
98 Infiniti and it has zero clear coat issues on the hood or roof.

People who don't live in colorado don't skews realize we aren't some arctic land. Many people will actually tell you we get more sun than Florida. Even during winter, it can dump half a foot of snow over night, be sunny the next morning and everything is melted by noon. Plus at 5000 feet the sun can be extremely intense.
