TJ OEM Foglight Switch - Operation & Pinout

Hi everyone!

I purchased an OEM foglight switch from JeepsAreUs.com and am trying to figure out the pinout.

First question: Does this switch work the same way as the OD/OFF switch?
Ie. The switch light is off. You press down on the switch and the switch bounces back up but, the light is on and the switch function is invoked. Then, you press down on the switch again, it bounces back up and the light and switch function is deactivated.

I would think it works in the same fashion since the foglight switch is nearly identical in appearance.

I did a search on this forum and found this pinout (which doesn't work correctly... I'll explain on the next post)

If you wire the lights as in the picture above, the switch function and light only work when the switch is depressed. If the switch were to 'pop' up, then the light and function would turn off. This is not how the OD/OFF switch works.

I currently have the switch setup on my table with a 9 volt battery, some wires and an LED functioning as my 'foglights'.

Does anyone know if the foglight switch works as an on or off switch OR if it toggles on and off by alternating depressions?

Here is a picture of my testing rig (yeah, I know it's ghetto):

And what's the problem with it not working exactly like the OD/OFF switch? You push it down, it stays, and the fogs turn on. You lift it up (or push the top part of it back in) and the fogs turn off. That's how it's supposed to work...

Actually, the problem is that the switch will only stay down if you push it down slowly and carefully. If you just push it down in a normal way, it pops right up like the OD/OFF Switch...

Look here: www.postmiami.com/POPSUP.mpg

Thanks for the help/reply!

Ah sorry, I didn't watch the video the first time around. That's not how mine acts at all, looks to be a problem with the switch. I don't know if you can "break it in" at all, or if you need to talk to jeepsareus about replacing it, but you're not going to have a lot of luck as is.

Aha!! I think I'm finally getting somewhere.... LOL!

So, the OEM Foglight switch is supposed to work on an on and off position?

If that's the case, then I just got a defective switch... 'cause mine pops right back up after being pressed. That's why I thought it was supposed to work like the OD/OFF switch...

Oh well, I'm stuck with it now since I cut the plastic housing for those pins in the back...

I'm pretty crafty with these things so, if I can't get it to work as it's supposed to.... then, I'll make it work the way I want it to!!

If by any chance, anyone has any other ideas... feel free to throw them this way.

You could wire it up with a latching relay. I haven't had the chance to use one myself, but they're supposed to turn on with the first pulse and off with the second.

Drawback would be the handy little green light in the switch still wouldn't work, you'd have to work in a separate indicator if you wanted to know when your fogs are on. (Or maybe you could make it work with some crazy wiring )

If it'd defective though, it isn't as if jeepsareus would be able to resell it anyway, so the fact that you've cut it might not matter. Try to get a hold of them and see what they say. Worst case, they say no and then you have to start your workaround.

bfr, thanks for that link. That's exactly what I was looking for. I did search after search and never found it so, I opened up this new thread. Thanks!

spyderbyte, I opened up the switch and 'weakened' the spring/latch inside. It now works the way it supposed to. It wont pop up that easily when pressed.
Thought this would be easier than busting my brain do figure out how to get that LED to stay on when the relay is on... though, now that I write this... hmmm... maybe jump some wires directly from the relay back to the LED in the switch?

See? There I go again... I'm leaving it alone!

I'll post some pics up when I'm done.

Thanks!!

Hmmm... If I'm running 35watt lights... Do I even need a relay? Couldn't I just go straight from a power source to the lights and back again?

Do you really want to risk melting all your work so far to save about 5 bucks worth of wire and a relay?

Glad to hear everything seems to be working!

Hahaha... I had already bought the relay ($12.00) and the wire ($30.00), 4 spools of 16g @30ft. each. I was just fishing for enough justification to return the stuff. Thanks alot!! LOL. I guess I'll do it the right way....

P.S. I just painted the lights to match the bumper with bumper coat...
