TJ NP231 same as the XJ NP231?

Are the TJ/XJ T-Cases the same? I know the XJ clocks the case down a bit farther than the TJ but I am under the impression this is due to the way the tranny is drilled not the TC.

Anyone know for sure? I'd like to use the 231/SYE out of my TJ in my "new" XJ and would like to know before tearing the XJ apart.

im 99% sure they are. what kind of sye is on it? you could just look at the manufacturers website and see if the same sye is listed for an xj and tj.

Just re-read my post, I worded it badly.

Finally getting around to installing an Atlas in the TJ and I want to use the complete transfer case out of my TJ (already has sye installed) in my XJ to save spending the $$ for an sye for it.

Really don't want to tear the XJs case out and find out it won't work and have the XJ down while I wait for the sye to get here.

Yep, '98 with 103k on the clock, 4.0, auto, D30/8.25 (29 spline) super clean, has the factory tow package so it's got a trans cooler already. Going to build a nice little mountain trail/expedition rig, 3-4" lift and 31"s with TT/ARB. The wife likes it so much she's going to sell her 4dr and look for one.

Thanks a lot for the info, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. Now to pull the TJ into the garage and get on with the swap.
