TJ lifts.. might go rough country

How do the rough country springs ride on a TJ, I know they are rough riding on XJs??? I know everyone says go re but im looking at the price point this is going to be a daily driver and it will hit the rock parks here in town once or twice a month... It might take a couple of trips to colorado a year but that is it... Mostly a dd... Looking for 3.5 to 4" of lift to be able to stuff 32s or 33s....

re 3.5" is way better my friend has the rough country and i have the re and its a world of difference. the 300 dollar difference is worth it. the springs are better, you get the quick discos, and the components are of much higher quality.

Springs have little to do with ride quality.

Its the shocks that are the most important factor.

If you want enough lift for 32-33" tires, I'd recommend 2-3" of suspension lift + a 1" body lift if you need it.

Actually, not 100% true. Spring rates make a huge difference in ride. But I will agree that shocks can make or break the combination.

As long as you're using TJ/XJ/ZJ springs, the difference is not huge.

4" TJ springs will typically vary from 160 lbs/in - 240 lbs/in. Swapping from one extreme to the other is not a huge difference. Most people won't even notice a difference.

Now if you're talking about the difference between a 450 lbs/in F-150 coil vs. one that is specified for a TJ, that is a different story.

I have the 4" rough country lift...was a cheap way to get me started in this mess. The ride is pretty rough on the road, seems to handle well off road. The control arms are not adjustable which make the install and maintenance fairly simple. I think for the price it is what you are looking for and I have 33's on it. I found a package on Ebay for $1,500 that came with wheels and tires too. I have been replacing all the shocks one at a time and it does seem to be getting smoother. I would look into getting the bar pin eliminators as well. The rough country shocks like to come out of their bushings. Don't pay more than $500.00 for the lift and I think it is a good decision.

I would look at these kits. http://www.dpgoffroad.com/TJLJtrailgunner.htm
RC has been around a long time but they just are not anywhere near the top for a TJ. Lift's are not cheap and you get what you pay for. Do your research and get what is right for you. Good luck.

RC springs and shocks are stiff! They don't hardly move up or down! The trails here are rocky and rooty. I changed the springs to Skyjacker and they really smoothed out the ride 50% and the flex increased a 100%. I then changed out the shocks and that finished the ride to 100% smoother and softer to my liking. Where the whole Jeep would ride up a rock or root and then the whole rig would slam down off the the other side, now the axles do all the work going over or off the obstacles. But for the money, you can beat all the hardware that comes with the kit, if all the pieces make it to your house. My front links were missing and still haven't been able to get the a#$%hole to send them to me. I wound up using the kit's rears in the front and removed the rear swaybar. Oh, BTW, the kit is so stiff you don't even need the front or rear swaybars!

If it's a DD then it is even more important that you don't go cheap. Putting up with a crappy ride offroad won't be an issue if you aren't driving the jeep but a couple of times a month. It makes it an easy comprimise that you won't have to put up with a whole lot. On road you will regret it. At first it might not bother you, but it will get irritating unless you like a stiff ride. I bought one of the most expensive small lift kits available. OME is not cheap. But I got every dime out of it and it was well worth it. It sucks paying the money, but it sucks harder to pay money and end up unsatisfied.

It's the shocks that make the ride generally, not the coils. Althought I've read people complain about RC's coils on here before. It's not just JF. There are other forums saying the same thing.

Everyone says go RE for a reason. If you can't afford it at first, wait. That's what I had to do to get my OME setup. It took me months of putting money aside, all that time I was reading, learning, weighing different options, and comparing, all while saving up. And you know what? I have no regrets and got exactly what I was expecting out of the lift. The jeep is better in ever aspect. Cornering, off road flex, ride quality. Want more lift? Go RE. How much more is it? Sometimes only a few hundred dollars can make a HUGE difference.

Personally, I wouldn't touch RC. Do a search. There are enough horror stories that I think it's reasonable to find some other manufacturer until they fix some of their issues.

Sure RC has been building a better rep. here on the forums as of late because they have reps. that now post regularly on JF, and I applaud them for that. I wish more manufacturers would do the same. I think that's highly commendable.

However, as stated above... if you want THE BEST go with Rubicon Express or JKS. RC has a lower price point for a reason; lower quality components.

I am on a budget and it was either a RE BB (monotubes for $410) or the RC 2.5" kit ($310). In most cases, Spring lift>spacer kit. I'm glad I went with RC lift. The 2.2 shocks are nice. I would NOT say the ride is better than stock, but it is definitely comparable to stock.

I had a friend who had the OME HD kit ride in my Jeep and he claimed that the RC kit was smoother than the OME kit. I never rode in his Jeep before he got a JK, so I cannot compare. But this new kit is A LOT better than the old RC stuff. In fact, I'm pretty sure their new 4" X-series has ACAs.

But if you are not on a super tight budget like me, you may want to look into RE or FT....But for the money, you get a good buy with RC
