TJ high steer kit

I have a RE LA 4.5" kit, and a buddy has 4" rough country kit, both of us bent the drag links this weekend wheeling. So, who has the best high steer kit. I'm looking at the currie kit now, and know it is a heavy duty kit, but not sure it raises it much.

Currie's steering upgrade does not raise anything, it is just heavier duty components. The Off-road Only U-turn steering raises the tie rod about 2 inches and is heavier components as well. This is what I have and like it just fine. Neither is technically a "high steer" kit though.

Check out Teraflex's cross-over kit. See this write-up:
http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/mambo2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=69&Itemi d=32

I bought the knuckle and draglink used and had a tie rod fabed up. This is a great setup, but you will keed to buy the sway bar link relocation bracket if you run a sway bar. Also, you may need a flat (zero drop) pitman arm depending on the angle of your trackbar. I used a stock pitman arm, but had to ream it and place the dragling on top of the pitman arm to avoid bump steer. This is a rock solid kit when it is installed correctly.

Another great kit is Toys By Troys. http://www.toysbytroy.com/cubecart/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=96

TnT makes a nice looking product.

http://www.tntcustoms.com/webv5/knuckleoversteering.asp
Quote:
Our steering solution uses 1-ton tie rod ends and .250 wall DOM tubing. The effective steering raise is 3.5", and when installed with a over the axle trac-bar mount, converts your steering into what it really should have been from the factory. For the first and last time, fix your steering the right way.

Each system ships with all necessary tie-rod ends, jamb nuts, and direct threaded tie-rod and drag-link tubes.

Dana 30 $369.95
Dana 44 $389.95

So does Rock Krawler

TJ X Factor Steering Upgrade

$399.00

1.5" Solid Stock Knuckle Over Tie Rod, 1.25" Solid Stock Drag Link, Bump Steer Free Operation, Great For Full Axle Droop Conditions as well as High Articulation Conditions.

**For TJ's Lifted 4 to 8 Inches

ORO's U-turn is very nice, but pricey

http://www.offroadonly.com/products/new/u-turn/
Quote:
* A crossover steering design that eliminates steering toe change from suspension height change.

* Drag link is 1.25" diameter 4130 chromoly, welded, formed and heat treated for ultimate durability.

* Tie rod is 1.375" diameter 4130 chromoly, welded and heat treated for ultimate durability.

* Tie rod and drag link painted with Rustoleum Hammerite for easy touchup.

* Custom 1 1/4 hex thread insert bungs that are radially MIG welded, for easy and proper jam nut tightening at each jam nut.

* A drag link connection at the passenger hub that allows full turning radius lock to lock to match the steering box.

* A drag link design allows clearance for track bar bracket/sway bar bracket. No bracket trimming is required after you lift your Jeep.

* Custom hubs that bolt to your original steering knuckles, machined and TIG welded for strength, tapered for tie rod end attachment.

* Improved steering feel, removing the "Dead Spot" commonly associated with a lifted TJ steering.

* Minimal"bump steer".

* U-Turn™ is fully compatible with a stock trackbar, Rubicon Express Extreme Duty track bar, Full Traction Drop Bracket and most others that relocate front track bar at the frame end.

* U-Turn™ requires a stock pitman arm.

* Steering stabilizer bracket included, it DOES require an aftermarket or OEM replacement steering stabilizer, contact ORO for details.

* Designed for TJs with up to 6" of lift. Stock height TJs may have a slight interference during maximum compression, not an issue during articulation.

* 100% bolt on application for TJ Dana 30/44 front axles with or without ABS sensors installed.

The price for the U-Turn™ steering is $649. Shipping is approximately $24.00 to either coast. Express delivery is available at additional cost.

Rusty's Offroad makes one

Quote:
With our jeeps getting taller and rocks getting in our way, Rusty's has designed and built a raised over the knuckle steering system. This raises the tie-rod 3.5 inches as well as decreases the drag link angles.

The system includes a version of our proven steering conversion, adjustable trac bar with frame mount, weld on axle mounts, weld on sway bar axle mount, and knuckle shim inserts. All bolt on parts come black powder coated and weld on parts are raw steel.

We use the highest quality 3/4" greasable heims with a 5/8" hole. Score, High Desert, Corr, Scca, just about every type of race vehicle uses heim steering. For those that would rather have tie-rod ends, all of our steering conversions are available with high quality tie-rod ends as well. The quality heim joints we use are stronger than tie-rod ends and if greased regularly should last as long as tie-rod ends, even on daily driven vehicles.

Another option with this kit is to run the tie-rod under the knuckle and the drag-link on top.

* NOTE: THIS SYSTEM IS NOT BOLT-ON AND ONLY A PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC OR FABRICATOR SHOULD INSTALL WELDING AND MACHINING IS REQUIRED.

With our OTK Steering setup we recommend a 15x8 wheel with minimum 4.75"" backspacing. Stock wheel will not have the clearance needed to run this setup.

Parts Included:
• Tie-Rod (1.5" DOM 250 wall)
• Drag Link (1.5" DOM 250 wall)
• Trac-bar(1.5" DOM 250 wall)
• Trac-bar Axle Relocation Bracket (weld-on)
• Heavy Duty Trac-bar Frame Mount
• Sway bar mounts (cut off old, weld in new)
• Steering Stabilizer Brackets
• All Hardware

Jeep 1 Ton Steering Upgrade.
Available for all makes and models of Jeeps.

Looking to upgrade your stock Jeep steering? Is your lifted Jeep having alignment problems? With our Jeep 1 ton steering upgrade, you eliminate the hard to adjust "Y" stock steering, it allows for a longer drag link to help with your steering angles, and most importantly gives you heavy duty steering that will take a beating and hold up to the off-road abuse.

The rods are a beefy 1.25" diameter DOM, with an almost .25" wall; threads are direct tapped into the tube. This means (unlike a threaded insert) the TRE has full thread engagement into the tube for the length of its threads. On this system the passenger side TRE dust boot is replaced with a polyurethane spacer, which pulls the body of the TRE against this knuckle. This eliminates the tie rod roll that an inverted T setup sometimes has.

I don't have the over-the-knuckle kit....but my rusty's off-road tie-rod bends all the time. I guess it's better then breaking, but on a DD it cause alignment issues once your back on the street. I have to bend it back as close to straight as I can with a pry bar almost every time I go crawling. My b-in-law has the rock crawler set-up and LOVES it.

Wha?? My Rusty's tie rod is BEEFY. I have bashed this thing into more rocks than I can count, and the only thing I've had to do is replace the crappy factory TREs. But the rod itself has proven indestructible to me so far.

** Knocks on wood ** I'm going wheeling / camping today at noon for the whole weekend...

Grewe: awesome reply: THANKS! I work on dial up, so that helped a TON! Now, I'm alittle confused on what is the best way to approach this issue. I have the Rubicon Express LA kit, which runs a drop pitman arm, and drops the trac bar at the frame mounting point to keep them at the same angle. The jeep drives great, and I hate to compromise the handling as it is a daily driver hauling my kids. My buddies jeep has a rough country basic 4" that came with an axle bracket for the track bar. It handles nothing like my jeep, and his is a play toy, so it will not affect him as much.
I'm leaning towards the currie setup this morning, but would think that raising the drag link (I belive I'm referring to the correct part: tie rod that connect both wheels together) would be better than building a solid peice to beat off of everything in the path.

No problem. I was looking to put them all side by side anyways. And if anyone else knows of more, feel free to add them.

If your rig is going to be daily driven 90% of the time, then the Currie set up makes the most sense. It will keep all of your steering angles exactly the same as stock, so you'll be able to keep your nice driving feeling.

For your friend, I would DEFINITELY recommend a 1 ton crossover steering setup. Especially if he is going to be bashing into lots of rocks.

These are all only my opinions, of course. I think I'm going to go with the Rock Krawler set up, as it is made of solid stock. I don't really like their knuckle setup, but all of that will be protected by the tire anyway.

Rocky Road?

Anybody use the "Rocky Road Ott high steer kit"? It looks pretty solid and is a true "bolt-on" or at least the website says it is. It is reasonably priced and seems to have every component necessary to truly transform your steering setup.
Any input is welcome! Thanks.
