Hi i recently pulled my front wheels off on my 01 tj and notices that the front wheels are hard to turn by hand i know theres sopose to turn realitively easily by hand. I inspected the brakes and they look fine. i checked the calipers, sliders ect. everything seemed ok. I replaced both left and right calipers and brake hoses anyways just incase they were causing draging but it still seems like it takes to much effort to turn them by hand when the tire is off. Is this normal?
It depends what "much effort" really is. Is it still hard to turn them with the tires on? And I would have assume the T-Case is not in 4wd... Front tires should turn relatively easy when both sides are in the air. And if it isn't the brakes, it could be a seized bearing...
Regardless, you should be able to hear where the friction is...
Yes i thought it may be that but i didnt hear any whining noises or anything coming from either side theres no play in the tires when pull on them or anything. I mean they are harder to turn than most vehicles that ive seen . its been running slugish and ever since i got it its only been getting 10 mpg so i though this draging in thr front may be causing all of this
Have you pulled your front diff cover? I would guess if it were anything in there, you would hear or smell something, but it's worth a look, especially if you haven't changed the fluid in a while.
Yea i do need to change the front diff. fluid anyways i did the rear when i purchase it jeep claimed they did all this but you can never trust them. so i do it anyways. But i would think id hear some kind of noise if this where the problem ive had a rear go on me before and it made a very loud wining noise.
On a Tj model you have to remember that the front drive axle will always have more than usual effort needed to turn due to the fact that there is so much driveline resistance, the front axles are both connected to the front carrier all the time and to the t-case, there will always be more turning effort than most vehicles for this reason. Even though the t-case isn't in 4x4. If you had the manual front disconnect/lock hubs you would notice a huge difference in turning effort.
This is why in 2wd making a tight turn it sometimes will feel like your in 4wd.
I am assuming that you have tried to turn both front wheels and compaired to one another. If it was a seized bearing you would hear it when driving down the road and it would likely be loose.
Hope my $.02 help a little.
