Tj Braking is terrible
Is it that all TJ's are terrible at braking? It seems like I can't get my wheels to lock up if I tried. I have to begin stopping twice as far as my subaru and I have to apply what seems like a ton of pressure on the petal.
Recently went and picked it up in Tucson and my father said his buddy who is a mechanic just put new brakes on it so maybe they just need to be taken in and adjusted? Any ideas?

it's probably because you run a 33
mine takes a while to stop too, and i can definitely tell the system wasn't designed for tires bigger than 30s when i have the money i'm going to upgrade to some ebc yellow stuff pads and centric premium rotors http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/ebc-yellow-stuff-brake-pads-centric-prem-rotors-599703/?highlight=yellowstuff i would love the vanco system but it's a little out of my price range right now ![]() |

I guess it could be the tires, but I used to have a full size blazer with 35's and don't remember it being that bad. Then again I was probably just used to it. I guess I just have to upgrade them eventually.

I noticed you have an automatic. The trans is constantly trying to turn the wheels against the brakes so that is a huge amount of why it is so much worse for you.
My Jeep can stop 33s alright, they're a bit touchy in the rain but otherwise are acceptable. Vanco is the best option if you want it to stop stupid-fast.

I have a factory set-up. 30"s (sahara). I was running too much air in my tires. I lowered a bit and my Jeep actually stops now, instead of lock n' slide. The paint on the roads was the worst, major sliding on painted markings, especially when damp. Jeeps are light especially the rears. And the drum brakes in the rear don't help, right?

You don't, but if you can't, then how much braking performance are you leaving on the table?
Are you 1% away, 10% away, or even more from being able to lock them up? Perfect braking is being able to maintain threshhold during a braking event. That is the fine line between rolling and skidding. If you can't get there, then you need to be able to.

The trans only does what the motor tells it to.

33's should not be giving you a problem, i run 37's on stock brakes and i can lock them up no problem.
